The wikicode should look the same anyway, even in diffrent articles. Just to clarify based on your latest edit summary, changing captions ''if you haven't otherwise made significant contributions to the wiki'' is a no-no. If you've done a lot of other useful edits—fixing typos, adding new info and/or images, starting or expanding articles, etc.—you earn the reward of adding/changing captions. (Of course, just because you're ''allowed'' doesn't mean you ''should''...) This isn't to say you did something wrong; Black Mage doesn't appear to have made a whole lot of contributions yet, and his alteration didn't really improve anything, so your decision was proper. Your description in the edit summary wasn't quite right, is all.
