Buster Witwicky and his friends were watching A Kiss for Us at the Community Drive-In when they were rear-ended by a yellow Beetle. Shortly after, a group of jets arrived, along with a homicidal tape deck, transformed into giant robots, and began duking it out with four other robots that had been disguised as cars.
