Hoist fears new academy teacher Grimlock, until the team stages an intervention to show him that everyone is afraid of something.
Synopsis
[edit]Whirl has great news for the other recruits—they're getting a new teacher! Unfortunately she was so excited, she didn't ask who it was, so the recruits are left to speculate over who is going to be teaching them. Medix offhandedly reveals Ratchet is his uncle, which distracts the group for a few moments. The students finally assemble outside and Heatwave reveals their new teacher is Grimlock. The recruits celebrate as the Dinobot himself arrives, all except Hoist, who is terrified.
Class convenes in the gym, where Grimlock demonstrates how size isn't everything when dealing with bad guys by knocking Wedge over with his tail. Hot Shot fares better until Grimlock catches him unawares. Hoist points out their new teacher is making a mess of the gym. Grimlock attempts to instruct Hoist on the topic of dealing with Insecticons, which mainly results in Hoist fleeing in terror. The next class takes place outside, with Grimlock supplying the students with protective bubbles and tasking them with trying to catch him. Hoist is conspicuously absent, which Grimlock later brings up with Heatwave.
Hot Shot finds Hoist covered with pink blotches and claiming to have "rust rot", but Heatwave isn't as easy to convince and sends Hoist to class. As Grimlock regales the recruits with stories of other less-friendly Dinobots, the other recruits realize Hoist is under the bleachers, where he claims to be looking for a tape measure. Grimlock goes for more supplies, and the other recruits finally get Hoist to admit he's afraid of Dinobots. The recruits point out everyone's afraid of something and promise to help him get over his fear. When Grimlock returns and encounters Mister Pettypaws, Hoist realizes the Dinobot is terrified of cats, and rescues him by luring Mister Pettypaws with a ball. Hoist promises he can work through his fears.

- —Hoist and Hot Shot
"Spaghetti! It's like a million tiny snakes... with tomatoes!"
- —Whirl on her greatest fear.
Notes
[edit]Continuity notes
[edit]- It's Grimlock! After having appeared in the background of the show's title sequence since the beginning, the big guy finally makes his debut. Despite visually being based on his evergreen design, in a concession to Hasbro's push for a unified brand look, the dialogue makes it clear that this is still the lovable lug from the 2015 Robots in Disguise series rather than a new incarnation or the other Aligned Grimlock.
- Wedge knows Grimlock from his collector card, presumably the same cards that will later be introduced in "Battle of the Bots".
- Grimlock is still afraid of cats, a trait he first exhibited in the Robots in Disguise episode "Even Robots Have Nightmares".
Transformers references
[edit]- Medix mentions his uncle Ratchet.
- Other suggestions for potential teachers include Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Arcee and Windblade.
- Grimlock asks Hoist what he would do if he encountered an Insecticon in a dark alley.
- Grimlock recalls battling the Decepticons Underbite and Scowl.
Real-world references
[edit]- The title is of course a pun on Tyrannosaurus rex, Grimlock's alternate mode.
- Ripples form in a puddle when Grimlock approaches, mimicking the infamous scene of the water cup rippling when the Tyrannosaurus rex creeps up in Jurassic Park.
Trivia
[edit]- Heatwave previously said the title phrase in the Rescue Bots episode "Return of the Dino Bot".
- Medix also mentions his great aunt Apax, grandpa Torquesteer and his second cousin Wrench.
- Grimlock categorizes Chompazoids as a subspecies of Dinobot.
- Grimlock's evergreen-styled body features wheels on the sides of his legs and giant rockets on his back resembling Trypticon's cannons, hinting at a new vehicle mode (presumably the motorcycle form of his Rescue Bots Academy toy); however, he never transforms for the show's entire run.
- Hopefully, Hoist doesn't find out about the other teachers' Dinobot forms.
- The training academy is on the mainland, so we are left to wonder how exactly Mister Pettypaws made his way over from Griffin Rock.
