Synopsis

[edit]

Boulder starts the recruits on another lesson about Earth culture. Today's lesson is on the scourge that is smartphones. After running through the capabilities of the average smartphone, Boulder tells them to familiarize themselves with the phones, but only on their own time. Whirl is later trimming trees when her phone falls out and starts playing music. She sends a video of herself dancing to the other recruits, interrupting Hot Shot as he cleans the floor. Medix is concerned because Wedge isn't answering his texts, while Wedge has become addicted to a game.

During one of Heatwave's classes, the recruits are too absorbed in their phones and don't listen to the important information he's giving them. He takes them to Hero Hall to show what they've learned. The simulation starts with Tough Luck Chuck trapped in a cave and the recruits try to find a route up to the top of the mountain, but all the tunnels lead to dead ends. Heatwave is surprised they didn't work out that they had to take a downwards tunnel to go up as he instructed in the lesson, and Boulder arrives to complain the recruits' chores are all only half done. The recruits realize they've been letting their phones interfere with their work and resolve not to use them while working again.

Elsewhere Wes is hiking while talking to Cody on his smartphone. Distracted, he wanders into a cave and walks into a support, causing a cave-in which traps him. Cody alerts the recruits, who head to the woods near Griffin Rock. By ringing Wes's phone, they track him down and Wedge starts digging out the cave-in. Unfortunately the other recruits decide to take a selfie, and therefore miss when the rocks above start falling, almost resulting in Wedge being flattened. When they realize digging isn't going to work, they recall Heatwave's earlier lesson and hit on the idea of reinforcing the mountainside first. They soon have Wes extracted from the cave.

The recruits turn in their phones to Boulder and he checks what they've learned about the devices. Hot Shot tries unsuccessfully to hold on to his, and has to turn it over as well.
