When Hot Shot is given chores to do by Heatwave rather than what he considers real training, he is stunned to find that everything is a learning experience and Heatwave is a great teacher.
Synopsis
[edit]The recruits are all looking forward to the first day of training with their mentors, all except Hot Shot who has been partnered with Heatwave. He reports to Heatwave, who tells him to clear the yard of leaves. Hot Shot finds it slow-going, but realizes he can do it faster by tying three rakes together and towing them. Heatwave next assigns him to carefully remove the weather monitoring equipment from the Academy roof. Observing Bumblebee and Wedge ziplining, Hot Shot realizes he can do the same with the equipment.
The recruits later reassemble in the living area to go over what they've learned, but Hot Shot grouses over the chores Heatwave has been having him do. The other recruits thinks it's a build-up to the real training tomorrow, but the next day Heatwave assigns Hot Shot the task of draining the pool. Hot Shot again finds a quicker way of achieving the task by using a hose. He returns to Heatwave to complain, but Heatwave points out he learned a lot from the tasks. Whirl interrupts them as there's an actual rescue to carry out—some foxes stuck in a tree by a forest fire.
Finding the fire is too large, Hot Shot ducks back to the Academy to get the hose. While Wedge and Hoist steady the tree, Hot Shot and Medix use the hose on a nearby pond to extinguish the fire. After Wedge and Hot Shot clear the hot ashes from the ground, they're able to use Hoist's cable to zipline the foxes to the ground. Hot Shot realizes he owes Heatwave an apology and on cue, his mentor arrives to receive one. Though Hot Shot is now keen for tomorrow's training, Heatwave reveals he'll be cleaning the Sigma and the trash compactor.
