The Bots and Burns must stop a giant glob of space slime before it consumes the town.
Synopsis
[edit]
The Burns family plays basketball, though Kade doesn't think it's fair that Cody gets the benefit of anti-gravity sneakers. Cody points out Doc Greene only made one pair. They're interrupted by Dani with the mail, including a letter from Gremsky Technical Institute for Graham. It turns out they've accepted him, but as it would mean moving to the mainland and leaving the team, Graham opts to mull it over. Cody receives a call on his cell that triggers the anti-gravity sneakers, and ends up answering it from nearby bushes—it's a call from Frankie Greene telling him to come to the lab urgently.
Arriving there by hoverboard, Cody finds Frankie and Doc Greene playing with Squilsh, a slimy compound created from a sample from Mars. After a blob is subject to an electric shock, it begins acting strangely intelligent, and eats the Doc's scissors. They chase it around the lab until it consumes a bucket of water and then escapes into the outside world. As it heads towards town, Cody calls the emergency line and alerts Kade. Kade has to view video footage to be convinced, but calls out the team. On their way to intercept the Squilsh, Graham and Boulder discuss Graham's possible move to Gremsky Tech.

The team finds the Squilsh heading through the park. Heatwave attempts to stop it by spraying it with water, but that only makes it bigger. Chief Burns contacts Doc Greene, who's still working on the problem, and Blades watches with horror as the Squilsh eats Mister Pettypaws. The Squilsh heads towards a bunch of kids on the playground, so Chase and the Chief get them to flee, but the Chief's foot is caught in a ladder. Though Chase protects him, the Rescue Bot is swallowed by the Squilsh. Burns contacts him over the comm, but the blob quickly moves out of the comm range, so the team chases it. Heatwave, particularly infuriated by the Squilsh, saves a driver from it and then throws a power line at Squilsh—the blob is shocked into expelling Mister Pettypaws, but escapes before they can likewise retrieve Chase.

Dani reports that the blob is heading out of town. Graham believes electricity is key, and they set up an ambush with batteries on Old Canyon Road. The charge doesn't appear to phase the Squilsh, which eats the batteries. Graham and Boulder soon realize the difference is alternating current versus direct current. While they're mulling over that with Doc Greene, Dani alerts them to the fact that the Squilsh is heading for Griffin Rock Community Pool.

When they get there, the pool is deserted. Kade notes that the pool's looking distinctly dirty, but they quickly discover that that's because it's filled with Squilsh, not water. The steadily-growing blob almost takes out Blades and Dani. Meanwhile, Greene works out a formula to discover how big a charge is needed and contacts the Burnses who are in the middle of being menaced. While Blades airlifts out the others, Graham and Boulder stick around to try and deal with the Squilsh with the pool's electrical box. Boulder stands by the power switch, Graham unhooks the power cable and, as it eats Boulder, dives in. The blob explodes from the electrical charge, leaving the swimmers, Graham, Chase and Boulder all safe and sound.
Back at the fire station, Kade's cleaning Boulder when Cody arrives with a Squilsh lava lamp for Graham to use at school. Graham, however, has decided not to go because being on the rescue team gives him more practical experience.

Notes
[edit]Continuity notes
[edit]- The hoverboard function of the ComTab is first seen in action in this episode.
Real-world references
[edit]- An obvious homage to The Blob, the classic 1950s sci fi movie starring Steve McQueen, with elements thrown in from the decidedly more horrific 1988 remake and - in terms of the light comedy aspects - the nearly-forgotten 1970s spoof sequel to the original film directed by Larry Hagman, Beware! The Blob. The Blob was also previously referred to in "The Alien Invasion of Griffin Rock".
- There have been many missions to Mars, though so far none have actually brought back samples. That whole "coming back" part is particularly tricky at the moment.
Animation and technical errors
[edit]- As Blades exclaims that the Squilsh is heading towards Mr. Pettypaws, his teeth are animated as though they're an upper lip.
- Though Cody doesn't use the word "squilsh" during his emergency call, the rest of the Burns family somehow already know what it's called.
Trivia
[edit]- Maybe Doc Greene was simplifying the definition of life for Cody and Frankie (maybe without reason; they're both pretty smart kids), but there are thousands of beings without "minds" that are considered alive, including plants, microbes, fungi, and sponges. Quite a few animal taxa, such as ants, have consciousness without intellect or self-awareness, and therefore could be said to have brains but not minds.
- No one thought to suggest Chase use his inbuilt taser?
