This article is about the Beast Wars ibex who is sometimes known as Longhorn. For the Beast Machines bull, see Longhorn{{#switch:{{#sub:Longhorn|-1}} != .= ?= .

Ramulus is a Maximal from the Beast Wars portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
I'm the best there is at what I do, and what I do is bub bub SNIKT claw city.

Ramulus (aka Longhorn) came online on prehistoric Earth, only to find that Optimus Primal and his crew had already returned to Cybertron, stranding him there alone. Since then, he's been an insufferable, snarky crank with a huge chip on his shoulder. He's as rough and tough in battle as his attitude suggests, which does make him a good bot to have around, if you can stand his relentless rudeness.

Vanadium alloy razor blades are mounted on each of his wrists, and he carries a modified high-yield tachyon gun on his arm, which he affectionately refers to as his "Slagmaker Cannon." During his time spent alone on Earth, his superior internal navigation systems were honed, improving his already impressive abilities as a scout. His fractured spark crystal can periodically shoot ion pulses across his body, shutting down vital circuits.

When the Vok assembled a team of protectors (Primal Prime, Tigatron, and Airazor) to defend prehistoric Earth from the nefarious intentions of Tarantulas and his army, Tigatron found a crashed stasis pod and programmed it to find a beast form to scan. When awoken, Ramulus was furious to discover that Optimus Primal had left him and the other protoforms behind. Nevertheless, he was aching to put his anger to good use, and joined Primal Prime's team. Primeval Dawn Part 2 Following a costly defeat which left Primal Prime near death and put the Matrix in Tarantulas's hands, Ramulus's sharp words were a cause of further strife among the small Maximal group. However, as he watched over Primal Prime's body while Tigatron and Airazor consulted their Vok masters, Ramulus fled the Ark. This left Tigatron and Airazor presumably alone when Ravage led the Predacons in an attack against them, but their fears were calmed when Primal Prime appeared behind them, transformed into a temporary vessel of the Vok's power. 3H folded before this story could be completed, so the exact story of how Ramulus came to join the Wreckers is unknown. It seems likely, though, based on the needs of later stories and comments by the writers that Ramulus had left the Ark to find other allies, in particular Sonar, Packrat, Fractyl, and Waspinator. After defeating Tarantulas and restoring the Matrix inside Optimus Prime's body, the survivors returned to Cybertron in the transwarp portal that Tarantulas had been building.

After defeating Tarantulas, Ramulus and his new comrades traveled through a transwarp portal to Beast Era Cybertron, where they were immediately attacked by the Predacon Megatron's massive Vehicon army. Suddenly inflicted with a virus, they were quickly inoculated by the Wreckers commander Apelinq just before a Vehicon general knocked Apelinq through the portal by which they had arrived. Primal Prime assumed command of the remaining Wreckers, and along with Ramulus and the other troops from Earth, formed a new group of Wreckers.

Following Apelinq's return, Ramulus, Primal Prime, and Apelinq rescued Optimus Primal and Nightscream from attacking Vehicons. Even as he saved Optimus Primal's life, Ramulus did not miss the opportunity to malign the Maximal captain who'd left him on Earth. The Wreckers were subsequently called to the Oracle, where other small groups had also been summoned. After Primal Prime had been given a quest, he, Ramulus, and the other Wreckers fought their way through the Vehicons that stood between them and the Autobot shuttle they sought. During the ride on the Autobot shuttle, an altercation with the bounty hunter Devcon, a stowaway, indirectly caused Fractyl to cease functioning stably. Arcee used the healing power of her spark to keep Fractyl alive, but Ramulus's close proximity to this healing process caused his body's colors to short and change to red and gray. As he cursed his bad luck, he helped Apelinq forge a temporary medic using his Transfer Interlink and the ship's medical diagnostics program. After the shuttle was sabotaged, revealing a traitor was amongst their midst, the Wreckers still managed to land relatively safely on Archa Nine, their destination, and Ramulus woke Tigatron from his meditation so that they could explore this new world. Apelinq's creation was surprisingly eager to help, and Ramulus inadvertently named Apelinq's "kitty-cat scan". CatSCAN led them to Glyph and Tap-Out, the sole survivors of a science team that had been marooned on Archa Nine for centuries.

The native Akalouthans worshiped a strange rock-like object named the Divine Light, and it was surmised that this is what the Wreckers had been sent by the Oracle to retrieve and protect. However, the traitor presented himself first. Cyclonus made off with the Divine Light, leaving Ramulus and the other Wreckers behind. Betrayal

In the aftermath of their betrayal on Archa Nine, Primal Prime retreated into himself and the Matrix, and Apelinq's doubts continued to grow, but Ramulus would have none of it. It was time for payback, plain and simple. He just needed a target to be pointed at, and that was that. Primal Prime returned from his meditation with a new directive. After finishing repairs to their shuttle, Ramulus and the other Wreckers left Archa Nine.

They traveled to an icy planet ten systems away, and Primal Prime ordered Apelinq, Rodimus, Arcee, and Ramulus to follow him quickly outside, while Apelinq protested their hastiness. Apelinq's worries were, for the moment, unwarranted, as the sole inhabitant of the planet seemed to be the excommunicated Quintesson Al-badur. Ramulus, being a relatively young bot, had no history with the Quintessons, but he decided quickly that he didn't like them anyway. Though the Wreckers eyed Al-badur uneasily, he was willing to tell them the history of the Quintessons' attempts to use Vector Sigma to enslave the Transformers race. When Al-badur revealed that the Oracle itself was a Quintesson creation devised to control Vector Sigma, Primal Prime was taken aback. Had Ramulus and the rest of the Wreckers been led astray this whole time?

Their introspection was interrupted as they were surrounded by Sharkticons. All Ramulus asked for from his more-seasoned peers was a name to call them so that he could "address them properly" as he cut them to ribbons. Though the Sharkticons were armed with strange (yet somehow familiar) technology, they were eventually overtaken by the Wreckers. Given time to explain completely, Al-badur explained that the Divine Light gave its owner the full power of Primus. Disclosure

In the unpublished script to The Wreckers #4, while en route to Cybertron, Apelinq was able to identify the Sharkticons' technology as belonging to the outlaw Cryotek, and a secret message was encoded within the weapon which betrayed the Quintessons' plot to retake Cybertron. After the others carefully evaluated their options, Ramulus told them all to shut up. They were acting like "frightened prototypes," and they should just go stop this Cryotek without all their damn whining.

After arriving in orbit above the newly reformatted Cybertron and finding a full-scale Quintesson invasion, Primal Prime ordered his troops to concentrate only on Cryotek, the real threat. Taking Apelinq, Ramulus, Tigatron, and Al-badur with him, Primal Prime leapt from the still-airborne shuttle into the battle below.

But after fighting downwards through the layers of Cybertron, through seemingly endless legions of Sharkticons, their attack on the Predacon gangster, grown to intimidating size and power given by the Divine Light, was costly. Primal Prime had sacrificed himself, taking a fatal hit that was intended for Apelinq. With two of the Wreckers' most powerful disposed of, leaving only Ramulus, Devcon, Tigatron, and the Quintesson, all hope seemed lost. But suddenly, a glowing titan formed before them, from the combined bodies of Apelinq and Primal Prime, into a single powerful entity: Sentinel Maximus.

Though Sentinel Maximus was amazingly powerful, he still could not match Cryotek's new arsenal of abilities. Ramulus and the others found themselves busy fighting the traitor Cyclonus and Chro, Cryotek's pet mutated to enormous size. For a short period it looked like Skywarp, too, was on the side of their enemies, and he shot Ramulus. However, it was part of Skywarp's ruse to get close enough to attack Cyclonus, who he hated, but this didn't make Ramulus feel any better about the ordeal. Finally, Al-badur trapped Sentinel Maximus, Cryotek, and himself inside a containment bubble within one of the Quintessons' old banishment chambers. Ramulus was closest to the control panels, but by the time he was able to squeeze past the containment bubble to reach it, Sentinel Maximus had already sacrificed his life to end Cryotek's tyranny. At the end of the Universe conflict, Longhorn was part of Optimus Primal's army of the Children of Primus. During a fierce battle with the Minions of Unicron in the Cauldron, Unicron began to disintegrate beneath them, and Longhorn and a few others were carried by Primal through a transwarp portal that presumably led back to their native technorganic Cybertron. Razorbeast was ordered by Magmatron to wake the remaining stasis pods on prehistoric Earth as Predacons. Thankfully for Ramulus, Razorbeast was working undercover and inserted a viral code into the protoform-awakening process. This virus caused many of the protoforms to retain their Maximal status. Ramulus was one of those who heard Razorbeast's call to action, The Gathering #1 and was among the first to join up with him. Razorbeast's ragtag group was eventually found by the Predacons, and Ramulus fell in battle against Spittor. He recovered with the others after Magmatron was incapacitated and the Maximals retreated to a cave. The Gathering #2 Ramulus was appointed guard of the makeshift Maximal lair, a position which he did not relish, preferring to be on the front lines against the Predacons. The Gathering #3

Soon, the Predacons (led by Ravage) attacked the hideout, threatening Ramulus and other Maximals. They were saved in the nick of time by the Maximal protoforms that hadn't yet joined Razorbeast's posse. The Predacons were repelled after a fierce battle. The Gathering #4

  • Ramulus (Deluxe Transmetal 2, 1998)
Part of the first wave of fourth-year Beast Wars Deluxes, Transmetal 2 Ramulus transforms into a bio-mechanical [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}ibex|{{#if:||ibex}}]]. Like the other Transmetals 2, he has asymmetrical detailing and some parts finished in chrome. His beast mode horn assembly becomes a hand-held weapon for robot mode, with a gear-activated "pincer" action.. though the armors on his gauntlets causes come clearance issues when he tries to hold it. Flipping up the skullcap of the beast mode head reveals a spark crystal.
This toy was sold in Japan in theaters as an "import", in Hasbro packaging with a Japanese stickers for legal information, in conjunction with the 1999 Summer Toei Anime Fair.

A green-and-tan redeco of Ramulus was planned as a "running change" to be inserted into the 1998 Deluxe assortment, in the same manner as the black Prowl and white Dinobot. This is why Ramulus appears in that scheme in the initial Wreckers comics; at the time, 3H thought the toy would be released and wanted to feature the most up-to-date version of it. This green Ramulus would probably have been released alongside the blue Optimus Minor, whose samples have been found at a similar stage of completion.

Universe (2003)

Longhorn was retconned into being a new form for Ramulus in the Fun Publications comics.
Sold in the eighth wave of Universe Deluxes, Longhorn is a redeco of Transmetal 2 Ramulus, retaining all the normal functionality and gimmickry. Hooray!
All of his formerly-chromed bits are now solid plastic, thus sparing you the pain of cleaning up chrome flakes.

We thought he'd be an exclusive, but not that exclusive.
  • Ramulus's name is a portmanteau of "ram" and the name "Romulus". Coincidentally, it ends up as the Latin word rāmulus, which means "sprig".
  • Ramulus's involvement with the Wreckers was first revealed in a piece of artwork on BotCon's website. Since no one on the art was named, and basically no one knew of the dropped running-change deco on Ramulus's toy (see above), it was believed at first that the green and blue version of Ramulus's toy might be a new character and possibly an exclusive for the upcoming convention. Several people believed, based on his colors and altmode, that he might be a new body for Generation 1 Hardhead. But no, he was just Ramulus.
  • According to Beast Wars Sourcebook #3, Ramulus is "even-tempered." Right.
  • Though 3H Productions dissolved before Universe was completed, the unreleased redeco of Ramulus was intended to serve as a new body for him. Artist Dan Khanna clarified<ref>Per personal correspondence</ref> that the use of the "Longhorn" deco in "Revelations Part 2" was supposed to be Ramulus in new colors. Indeed, Primal's coming back to pick up Ramulus provided some sort of closure for Ramulus's feelings of abandonment by Primal during Primeval Dawn. This idea was canonized years later by the Facebook version of Ask Vector Prime.
