Energy transfer modules are sneaky devices from the Dreamwave portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

To quell the extensive energy usage of the Transformer race, Shockwave created the energy transfer module (ETM for short). With it, a Transformer can draw energy from the core of Cybertron itself and the planet's inhabitants, bypassing the typical energon conversion process. With it, a Transformer has essentially unlimited energy to draw from.

However, the ETMs have an insidious function: to allow Shockwave to maintain the energies available to all those who are outfitted with them, while offering himself the lion's share of the energies.

Millions of years after the Great Shutdown, Shockwave was awakened. Using the time to himself, he researched and investigated the properties of Cybertron and its natives. Revelation Part of this research was the creation of energy transfer modules that were installed in all of the Transformers on Cybertron. Brothers' Burden Inside the ETMs, Shockwave added a failsafe in case he would be confronted by resistance, assuredly from the Autobots, that allowed him to control the energy assigned to a Transformer while maximizing the availability to himself. This feature came to be used when Ultra Magnus attempted to fight Shockwave in the chamber of Vector Sigma. Shockwave was able to easily overpower Magnus, but his physical superiority did not help him as Magnus pushed him to the pit under Vector Sigma to be disintegrated. Revelation
