Attention deflectors mask the presence of an object from casual observers.
Fiction
[edit]2005 IDW continuity
[edit]Brainstorm admitted to Rung that the handle in his Briefcase contained an attention deflector. House of Ambus
When it was revealed that Minimus Ambus had been hidden inside the armor known as Ultra Magnus, Rodimus concluded that the armor must have contained a hundred microscopic attention deflectors in order to prevent Ratchet from seeing the real Minimus. The Divided Self Later Ratchet confessed to Minimus that he had always known Minimus's secret and when probed further, remarked that attention deflectors "work for all of five seconds" and that he was insulted that Minimus thought he'd be fooled. The Sound of Breaking Glass
Brainstorm claimed that Ravage blended in so well because he wore hundreds of nanoscopic attention deflectors. The Sensuous Frame
Notes
[edit]- The attention deflector works in a very similar way to the perception filter from Doctor Who, which itself works in a suspiciously similar way to the Somebody Else's Problem Field from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The attention deflector is most likely an homage to the former as author James Roberts is a noted fan of Doctor Who, while having not read the Hitchhiker's books.[1]
