Ped (RID)

Ped is a lousy bot-worm of a Decepticon from the Robots in Disguise portion of the Aligned continuity family.

HA-ha-HA! HA-ha-HA ha-HA! HA-ha-HA! HA-ha-HA ha-HA!

The hulking Decepticon Ped would be a loyal and effective foot soldier in the Decepticon army... if not for his crippling inferiority complex. Seen as figuratively and literally beneath other Decepticons, Ped stews in his resentment and makes plans to finally come out on top one day. Luckily for his enemies, Ped isn't terribly bright, and is easily goaded.

It's not that he doesn't have some skills. There are few who can tunnel through the ground as fast and efficiently as Ped, a skill he uses to conduct sneak attacks and avoid direct conflict. If he really needs to fight, he can sting foes with his mandibles, or simply smash them apart with his claws. But up-close combat isn't really his thing, so he sticks with keeping his foes disoriented, or at least at the bottom of a deep pit, so he can work uninterrupted and escape easily.

Back on Cybertron, they laughed at me. Called me a lousy bot-worm! But here, it's gonna be different... I'm gonna be the biggest thing on this PLANET!Ped, "Can You Dig It?"

Ped was one of the many Decepticons imprisoned aboard the Alchemor. When the ship crash-landed on Earth, he was freed from his stasis pod. He set up a network of tunnels and begun scrounging energon cubes scattered by the ship's crash, hoping to monopolize the precious resource so that he could negotiate with other Decepticons. He eventually attacked a human construction site to recover an energon cube. Not long afterwards, he raided Denny Clay's scrapyard and stole most of their stockpiled energon. Bumblebee and his team - along with Jazz- travelled into the tunnels to recover their energon. Bumblebee and Strongarm encountered him digging, and realized that his constant tunneling had undermined part of Crown City. Ped escaped after he realized that Sideswipe and Jazz had found his Energon stash. Ped attacked Sideswipe and disabled him; Jazz's sonic weapons collapsed the tunnel, and Ped escaped with the energon in the confusion.

Deeeee-Deeeee...

The Autobots later set up a trap to lure Ped aboveground and recapture him. However, they did not allow for the possibility that Ped would attack Denny and Russell Clay instead of beelining for the energon, and Ped incapacitated the other Autobots by dropping them into a sinkhole. Sideswipe managed to escape the pit and goaded Ped into attacking him. He was joined by Jazz, and together the two managed to bait the enraged Decepticon back into his stasis pod, at which point Denny dropped an electromagnet on his head. Can You Dig It?

Ped's stasis pod was later taken back to Cybertron by Optimus Prime, Windblade and Ratchet. Decepticon Island (Part 2)

The Ped Kreon is only available as part of the largest set in the 2015 Robots in Disguise-branded Kre-O product. He uses an orc helmet from the Dungeons & Dragons series, which gives him the show model's mandibles.

All of the 2015 Transformers Kre-O product was skipped by retailers in the U.S. (at first), seeing release in Canada, Australia, and various Asian markets. In late 2015, much of the line was finally released at discount in the U.S. through TJ Maxx stores, including this set.

Notes

• "Ped" is a term for a soil aggregate. A piece of dirt. Oof.
• The Japanese pronunciation of his name is extremely unfortunate.
• He doesn't seem too fond of his similarities to a worm.
• Ped's character model served as the basis for Crustacion.
• While Ped's species name wasn't given in the show, writer Adam Beechen would refer to him as a "Centipede-o-con" on his blog.
