Whirl (Cyberverse)

Whirl is an Autobot from the Cyberverse continuity family.

Whirl likes to go about his days with a smile on his face—if he had a face to smile with, that is. This cycloptic cadet is a cheerful chopper who will do whatever he can to help, even if his clumsiness often gets in the way of meaningful progress.

During the Ark crew's search for the Allspark, Whirl was among the Autobots that stayed on Cybertron to fight off Decepticon forces. Upon their return with the artifact, he assisted them in their battle to restore the planet, during which he peppered Lockdown with blaster bolts to get him off Kup and knocked Laserbeak out of the sky, saving Teletraan-X. After the Great War was won in the Autobots' favor, Whirl was among the Transformers captured by the Quintessons and placed in a simulation loop where Whirl would routinely get crushed under a loose cube statue. The Loop This lasted until Hot Rod managed to get him to avoid this fate by warning him of the loose cube statue. He transformed before he could get crushed, thereby freeing himself from the Loop. "Why can't we hover like regular helicopter people?"

Whirl joined the other freed Cybertronians as they journeyed into Maccadam's, which was revealed to be a part of the War Titan Iaconus. After going through a rigorous training program and encountering the vicious Skullcruncher, the group was dissuaded by Maccadam from activating Iaconus, as an effort to stop the Titan's past violent rampage had taken the lives of its citizens minus the bartender. After several failed attempts to awaken Iaconus, it was determined that a cityspeaker was required, the group mounting a rescue mission to retrieve Windblade. Holding off the Prosecutors with Hot Rod, Whirl was eventually shot down, his crash freeing Soundwave. After picking himself up, Whirl searched for his friend, eventually catching him in mid air and carrying him back to the bar where he was "thanked" by Soundwave for freeing him. The Trial Whirl provided air support for Soundwave's attack on a Bailiff. After the prisoner was captured, Whirl accompanied the group down to the holding cell in time for Bailiff to reveal that the Scientist was the primary target. The Prisoner

Infiltrating the Scientist's compound, the group came upon an impregnable door which Soundwave opened long enough only for him and Hot Rod to pass through. Left on the other side, the group tried futilely to blast it down before Laserbeak arrived with the Loop's source code. Running back to control node, the group shut down the parade and Whirl encouraged other Transformers to flee while being chased by a Prosecutor. The Scientist Whirl was part of a failed attack on the Quintesson ship, being saved only when Windblade managed to partly unearth Iaconus' massive arm. The Alliance

After the Titan's cloak was deactivated, Whirl was part of the front line that met the horde of Sharkticons and Prosecutors alongside Clobber and Rack'n'Ruin. When the Judge personally intervened, Whirl hovered around the larger mechanoid and peppered it with energon rounds, the combined attack sending it out of control, causing it to bring its own ship down and killing it. Before any celebrations could occur, the new Judge hovered out of the wreckage and revealed itself as Starscream. The Judge

Whirl was quickly seized by Starscream's tractor beams and rounded up with the rest of the Transformer race. The End Of The Universe I Starscream however refused to sentence their universe until he could humiliate Optimus Prime and Megatron for their crimes against him. As everyone began listing off various Cybertronian landmarks where the two allegedly were, Whirl silenced Clobber from giving the ruse away. Starscream eventually saw through the ruse and prepared to execute Arcee before Iaconus had reawaked. The End Of The Universe II

To deal with the War Titan, Starscream called upon the brainwashed Croaton. After he had hovered off to monitor the battle, Maccadam arrived to open the cells, though such an act ultimately cost him his life. Shortly afterwards, Starscream managed to kill Iaconus, turning Croaton on the rest of the Cybertronian race. The End Of The Universe III Whirl joined the other fliers in attacking the Titan but was knocked out of the sky. On the ground, he helped take out several Sharkticons and Prosecutors. The invasion was eventually stopped when Megatron returned to save the day and Windblade freed Croaton. With the Quintesson threat ended, the Transformers formed a truce. The End Of The Universe IV

After Bumblebee had snuck across the Decepticon border to retrieve Windblade, Whirl was called in on Hot Rod's behalf to airlift Windblade to safety while the scout battled the Insecticons. Though the two very nearly made it across the border, they were surrounded before they could cross. Optimus had to come to their legal rescue with Megatron releasing them, citing more important concerns. Enemy Line To discover what these concerns were, Optimus Prime sent Whirl to scout Decepticon territory but he could not find any unusual activity to report. Rack 'n' Ruin 'n' Ratchet

After Optimus had received instructions from the Thirteen to destroy Megatron's alternate version of the Matrix of Leadership, Whirl was part of the strike force that infiltrated Croaton and helped Grimlock preoccupy Decepticon soldiers, though he was trampled by Shadow Striker. Silent Strike

The entity known as "the Other One" that Megatron had been preparing for was revealed to be an alternate version of himself. As Bumblebee flew off with the alternate Matrix, Whirl tackled a Decepticon supersoldier that tried to stop him. Once the alternate Megatron had been defeated, Whirl was among the Autobots who celebrated Windblade's return. The Other One

Whirl was present for the Treaty of the Wall signing ceremony, cheering beside Wheeljack. The Immobilizers

When Tarn's forces attacked, Whirl was among the Autobots who gathered in the underworld to regroup, and later took part in the final battle against the Decepticon supersoldiers. He then participated in a wake for Soundwave after he sacrificed himself to stop Tarn.The Perfect Decepticon

Released in the seventh wave of Cyberverse 1-Step Changers, under the Battle For Cybertron branding, Whirl transforms into a Cybertronian helicopter (or back) with a single step, triggered by folding down/up his vehicle-mode canopy. His transformation is mildly more complex than most 1-Step Changers, requiring you to position his feet and helicopter rotors manually, making him more of a 4-Step Changer.

Whirl features a "Turbo Talon" action attack, activated by sliding a switch on his left arm.

Along with a few Cyberverse figures, this Whirl was meant to be released for the Japanese markets by TakaraTomy, under the name "Turbo Change Whirl" with a February 28, 2020 release date. Unfortunately, the toy's release was canceled due to the toyline's poor sales.

Released in the third series of blindacked Cyberverse Tiny Turbo Changers, Whirl changes from helicopter to robot and back in a few simple steps. Sadly, his rotor does not spin.

While the entire Cyberverse Tiny Turbo Changer line had spotty distribution in the US, Series 3 apparently never made it to US retail, appearing only in Canada, Germany, Hungary, Norway and Taiwan.

Whirl was rereleased without changes in Series 5, which did make it to Targets (briefly) in September of 2021, giving fans a better shot at obtaining him. He was also redecoed into Authentics Autobot Whirl.

Notes

• Incorporating Whirl into the series was Mae Catt's idea.
• Whirl's design is a mix of his Thrilling 30 toy (his landing skids, his blaster, his shoulder nacelles, and his missile launcher) and Nick Roche's design for the character in IDW Publishing's More than Meets the Eye comic series (his forearms, proportions, helicopter blades, chest vents, and head).
