*The lyrics to the French G1 cartoon theme song reference a cosmotron.  The same lyrics also make a seemingly arbitrary mention of [[Dr. Alcazar|Dr. Alcazar]] from "[[Roll For It|Roll For It]]", so it may be a reference to this device.  However, from the context of the song it sounds more like it's supposed to be a spaceship.  There is, in fact, a spaceship called the Cosmotron in the 1970 sci-fi novel, ''Tom Swift and his Cosmotron Express'', but this seems like an even less likely explanation.

Such a vital part that Ironhide can't even recall the name.

A cosmitron is a piece of Cybertronian technology of unspecified function. Whatever it does, it's vitally important to a Transformer's well-being, and the lack of one results in death.

The Transformers cartoon

[edit]
"I used to have a spare one here, but I used it to fix my electric toothbrush and it exploded."

Optimus Prime's cosmitron was severely damaged during a battle with the Decepticons. Ratchet discovered the damaged component and told the other Autobots that Prime's laser core would be extinguished if it wasn't replaced. Wheeljack had a spare, but it was back in his old workshop on Cybertron.

A team of Autobots and Chip Chase used the Decepticon space bridge to travel to Cybertron and retrieve the spare cosmitron, braving Decepticon guards and acid rain. They arrived back on Earth during a full-out attack on Autobot headquarters, but they got the cosmitron back to base safely. Wheeljack and Ratchet installed it in no time at all, and Optimus was back on his feet in time to repel the assault. Divide and Conquer

Notes

[edit]
  • Due to the fact there was no original dialogue script of "Divide and Conquer" on any of the original Transformers cartoon DVD sets, the actual spelling of this doodad was unknown until a copy of Don Glut's script made its way into the fandom's hands. However, the true spelling had in fact been previously suggested by the French title of the episode, which was "Le Cosmitron".
  • Speaking of, the script originally referred to the device as a "Cosmitronic Transformer", but the rest of the device's name was consistently blotted out with pen in all the dialogue. This was presumably done so the kiddies watching Transformers, the show, wouldn't be confused.
  • The lyrics to the French Generation 1 cartoon theme song makes reference to how Optimus Prime's cosmitron "crosses galaxies", likely in reference to it going through the space bridge in the episode.
