He's known primarily as a screenwriter — In 2006, he co-wrote the film Fido with fellow Beast Machines director Andrew Currie and Robert Chomiak. He also produced the Tales from the Far Side cartoon and has written episodes for many other shows.

In 2018 Heaton was elected president of the Writers Guild of Canada.
