They can apparently combine.

Ultra Magnus was infected by a swarm of Nanocons while arresting a Decepticon who'd been peddling miniaturization technology. All of the tiny Decepticons were killed shortly afterwards.
That is, until they were revived and started wreaking havoc inside him again. A downsized Rodimus, Skids, Whirl, and First Aid entered Ultra Magnus's body in order to combat the swarm, but ultimately the rest of the infestation was wiped out when he did the unthinkable: he smiled, crushing the Nanocons attempting to escape through his mouth with his jaw pistons. You, Me, and Other Revelations On a duplicate Lost Light created by a quantum accident, Ultra Magnus was rid of his Nanocon infection by using domesticated scraplets instead. The Road Not Taken
Notes
[edit]- In the More Than Meets the Eye Annual 2012, Skids theorizes that the dormant Nanocons inside Magnus becoming active again was one of the side effects of the Crystal City Metrotitan's psychic scream; which would make the twist that the other Ultra Magnus on the alternate Lost Light, which was nowhere near the Metrotitan, also suffered from a Nanocon outbreak around the same time an error. Writer James Roberts asserted that the connection between the Nanocons and the Metrotitan was merely a faulty assumption on Skids's part.[1]
