Drill Bit is a Predacon from the Beast Wars portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Drill Bit is very much a "robot in disguise." If you watched him go about his job, watched him closely even for an extended time, you would be unimpressed. To all observation, he is a grunt. He follows orders as they're given and suffers from little imagination or independent thought. Except you'd miss that below all that, there is a keen and eager mind that knows exactly how to play the game. Drill Bit quietly makes himself indispensable to his commanders without ever showing even the slightest sign of insidiousness. He has become Magmatron's good right hand, never revealing the writhing ambition that has him constantly thirsting for more power. He is extremely patient and calculating and is willing to wait as long as it takes to assure his ascension to come.

Drill Bit has a drill for a hand, which makes fighting Maximals that much easier. His preferred strategy is to drill a battlefield to within a hair's breadth of volcanic eruption and then sit back and let his foes trigger their own destruction.

His failures are both numerous and epic. Almost Sentinel Maximus level.

Drill Bit was brought to prehistoric Earth by Magmatron in order to raise an army out of the stasis pods left there after the departure of Optimus Primal's team. Before this plan was put underway, Magmatron first had Drill Bit sabotage the Maximal's shuttlecraft, planting a Transwarp agitator on its hull. Magmatron then had another in his entourage, Razorbeast, activate all the stasis pods remotely. When the Predacons caught on that Razorbeast had arranged for some of the protoforms to awaken as Maximals instead of Predacons, Drill Bit attacked him. Razorbeast, however, managed to get away by trampling over his adversary. Shell Game #1

2006 IDW Beast Wars continuity

The 'bot who would one day call himself "Drill Bit" served under Megatron at the tail-end of the Great War. Though the Tripredacus Council sought to let hostilities between the Autobots and the Decepticons die out after Optimus Prime and Galvatron both fell in combat, Megatron had more aggressive plans. His squadron attacked Tigatron when he approached them to broker peace between the two factions. While Predaking dealt with Tigatron's entourage, Megatron and his troops headed off for the Primal Counci's base of operation to bring them down. Once there, they managed to surround their targets, only for Silverbolt, Ironhide, Prowl, Unit-3, and Tigatron (who had caught up to them) to combine into Magnaboss and strike back. As they were being pushed back, the Tripredacus Council arrived on the scene, and surrendered to the Autobots on behalf of all Decepticons, ending the war. Dawn of the Predacus

"Alright, quick show of hands, who wants ice cream?"

Magmatron recruited Drill Bit, along with Transquito, Spittor, Iguanus, Manterror, and Razorbeast. Magmatron's plan was to use the abandoned stasis pods on prehistoric Earth to build an army and take over Cybertron. Upon arrival, Magmatron sent the others to watch over the stasis pods as they were activated. Drill Bit stayed by commander's side.

Razorbeast was revealed as a Maximal spy when Maximals started coming out of the pods. On his way out of Predacon camp, Razorbeast smashed through Drill Bit. The Gathering #1

While the rest of the new Predacon army sought to quell the new Maximal army, Drill Bit and Spittor, along with Magmatron, hunted down Razorbeast. Drill Bit got the drop on Optimus Minor, but Snarl got the drop on Drill Bit. He returned to his master unaccomplished. The Gathering #2

Later, Drill Bit and Magmatron rendezvoused with Iguanus. Iguanus had located a blank protoform into which Ravage's spark would be inserted. He then accompanied Magmatron and Iguanus to capture Megatron and send him back to Cybertron (to appease the Tripredacus Council). They succeeded in the capture, but failed to prepare the transwarp shunt. Grimlock intervened and easily defeated Drill Bit. The Gathering #3 The Gathering #4

Drill Bit was next seen participating in Ravage's all-out assault on the Maximals. He got tossed into the air when Torca erupted from the ground underneath him. The Ascending #1

Next, he was seen helping pin down a small group of Maximals alongside the Predacon ground forces. But Grimlock surprise-attacked them from behind and Drill Bit was once again put on the defensive.

When the Pack arrived, Drill Bit boldly ordered "drill 'im" when Lio Convoy confronted him and Iguanus. Lio responded with a barrage of point-blank missiles from his hidden mane launchers. And it looked like Drill Bit was blasting off again. The Ascending #2

Drill Bit was left behind on Earth when the Pack's transwarp cruiser returned to Cybertron with a sizable contingent of Maximals and Predacons to combat Shokaract's ascension. When it was decided to aid the Angolmois-infected Razorbeast against the Blendtrons, Drill Bit eagerly joined in on a combined attack against Rartorata and was later seen helping bring Drancron to the ground. However, it is unknown if he survived this battle. The Ascending #4

Part of the second wave of second-year Beast Wars Basics, Drill Bit transforms into an organic boll weevil. His "destruction drill"-arm can be flipped out for use in beast mode and uses a gear-wheel system to spin the bit, activated by turning the rubber-banded wheel on its underside.

The Drill Bit mold appears to have an engineering defect; the pegs on the insect-leg parts are pointed in the wrong direction to fit into the holes intended for them.

Drill Bit has the distinction of being one of the more notorious pegwarmers of his day.

This toy was released in Japan as an import with a Takara-applied sticker. This mold was also used to make Beast Wars II Drill Nuts.

Notes

• From issue #3 of The Ascending on, Drill Nuts is often miscolored as Drill Bit, leading to some minor confusion. It is simplest to remember that Drill Nuts returned to Cybertron at the end of issue #3, and Drill Bit remained on Earth, so identifying who is who becomes easier.
