- Mattock is an Autobot from the Marvel portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Mattock (or possibly Mattox) holds a dubious position in Cybertron history. On one hand, he is the one that, when the odds weren't looking good during the battle at Jan-Ja, caused Optimus Prime to lead a successful charge out of the trenches, shouting the legendary words: "Never Surrender!". On the other hand, he didn't do it on purpose and the "Never Surrender!" part was kind of directed at him.
Fiction
Marvel The Transformers comics
As another Autobot next to him was blasted into oblivion by Decepticon fire, the Autobot tried to convince Optimus Prime that fighting any more was madness and they'd best surrender so that the Decepticons might decide to spare their lives. Optimus ordered him to bring out the white flag, which the Autobot did happily. He was, however, shocked out of his euphoria when Optimus Prime further ordered him to bind the wound on his left arm with it instead of using it to declare the Autobots' surrender. At that, Optimus leapt out of the trenches, shouting "Never Surrender!", steering his troops into a charge that won them the battle. To his credit, the "white flag Autobot" also participated in the charge. Surrender! It is unknown if he survived to reflect on it all.
Notes
- Mattock was unnamed in his original (and, to date, only) appearance. His name comes from the pages of Ask Vector Prime.
- A mattock is a kind of tool, used for digging and chopping. Vector Prime notes that Mattock uses one as a weapon.
- Mattox, the other possible name for the character mentioned by Vector Prime, calls to mind the Battle of Appomattox Court House, where Robert E. Lee famously surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the United States Civil War. We see what you did there, Vector Prime.
