The triangulator detects an assortment of things, ranging from rocket exhaust to radio signals.

Brainstorm used the triangulator to lead the Steelhaven crew in following an Autobot distress signal to the intergalactic tranceiver at the Ark's former resting spot in Mount St. Hilary. When they did not find a group of Autobots, the triangulator detected traces of rocket exhaust and the Autobots left to follow the trail.
When Highbrow sensed high quantities of fuel residue, the triangulator corroborated with Highbrow's detection. Trial by Fire!
