Because such photos are created specifically to promote toys, products or events, MediaWiki asserts that an implicit public license exists for them. MediaWiki further asserts that because such photos can be reasonably assumed to represent that product in the best possible light, MediaWiki's general preference for using such images to illustrate those products constitutes an act of good faith.
Regardless the above, MediaWiki's use of promotional images to document and illustrate a product or character on MediaWiki would always fall under the fair use provision of United States copyright law. See Copyrights.
