During the Age of Expansion, Thunderhowl served under a Prime who dispatched him to destroy Crystal City. Though Thunderhowl breached the city's defences, he wound up trapped by the crystals, held in a state of suspended animation.

Salvation for the knight came sometime after 2007, when he was freed by the Autobots Bumblebee and Chromia, saving them from their own crystalline duplicates. After introducing himself to the Autobots, Thunderhowl agreed to aid them on their quest to save Windblade. Once they had entered the throne room, the Crystalline King generated an squadron of crystal Windblades to hold off the trio but Bumblebee's multiverse energy managed to shatter the entity. His quest complete, Thunderhowl returned to Iacon with the Autobots whereupon he pledged his loyalty to Optimus Prime. Thunderhowl
