The Super-God Masterforce toyline was introduced in Japan in 1988, as the successor to the Headmasters toyline.

Whereas the Headmasters toyline had featured a handful of Japanese-exclusive toys and characters, Masterforce deviated even further from the Western G1 franchise (as did the cartoon that was made to promote it) with Japan-only characters such as Overlord, who received a large and elaborate new-mold toy with a base mode, two Powermaster partners and a host of other accessories. Additionally, most of the non-Japanese-exclusive Masterforce toys were assigned markedly different character identities from the Western counterparts.
