The recruits are all excited about getting their new Mul-T-Cogs - a little too excited, as Hot Shot convinces them to take them before they're ready. And that leads to big problems and a big decision for Hot Shot, he could have never imagined.

Synopsis

The recruits arrive at their latest rescue — Mr Harrison is having trouble with his helipack again. Hoist's attempt to use his tow cable to hook the errant flier results in him hooking Wedge instead, so Hot Shot switches to jet mode and plucks Mr Harrison out of the air. After suggesting Harrison take some flying lessons, Hot Shot rejoins the other recruits who are feeling a bit left out. Hot Shot points out he could only do the rescue himself because of his Mul-T-Cog and the others will soon have their own. They visit Ratchet, who breaks the news that the other four Mul-T-Cogs won't be ready any time soon. He has Hot Shot hang back however, has he's come up with the theory that Hot Shot's Mult-T-Cog may be able to get the others working and indeed, as soon as Hot Shot stands close enough, energy leaps from his chest, appearing to activate the cogs. Ratchet dampens the young bot's enthusiasm, insisting the new cogs need to be tested thoroughly.

Hot Shot joins the other other recruits and immediately decides it'd be a good idea if they tested the Mul-T-Cogs. The recruits head to the lab and install their Mul-T-Cogs, but before they can do anything more, the alarm sounds. The recruits arrive on the scene to find chaos — it turns out Mr Harrison misinterpreted Hot Shot's advice and has been teaching flying lessons rather than taking them. The recruits go to transform to start rescuing people, only to discover they can no longer transform. Hot Shot ducks behind a tree and contacts Ratchet to confess what he's done. Ratchet tells him that his Mul-T-Cog should be able to fully charge the others, but at the cost of him never being able to transform again.

Hot Shot returns to the others with the new plan, but leaves out the part where it may rob him of his ability to transform. It works, however as the others transform and head off to continue with the rescue, Hot Shot finds the worst has happened and he's stuck in bot mode. The recruits bring Mr Harrison and his class back down to earth, before finding Hot Shot throwing stones into a nearby stream. He reveals he's lost the power to transform, though he'd do it again as it meant helping his friends.

Later back at the Academy, Hot Shot is moping and even turns down a Cube game. Ratchet arrives and fetches the other recruits, leaving Hot Shot to speculate he's going to be thrown out. The others return however, having come up with a plan of their own. The other recruits are able to use a fraction of energy from each of their Mul-T-Cogs to recharge Hot Shot's. Ratchet reveals that the extra charge will also give Hot Shot a fourth vehicle mode, so now all of the recruits will have to decide what new vehicle to scan.
