The Autobots invented and used dominator disks to override a Transformer's circuitry and bring them under the command of another being. This, uh... doesn't sound very heroic, but we totally swear that it is.

The Transformers cartoon
The Autobots made use of the disks and tagged them covertly to the Constructicons, which would have allowed the Autobots to control them once they merged into Devastator.
