When the Ark left Earth with most Autobots on board, they left behind some devices in Mount St. Hilary. An intergalactic tranceiver was among them.

When Goldbug and Buster Witwicky, expecting the Ark to still be there, arrived at Mount St. Hilary, all they found were the castoff devices. Goldbug and Buster used the intergalactic tranceiver to contact any Autobots for assistance. The plea was received by the crew of the Steelhaven, but Ratbat crushed Goldbug and kidnapped Buster.
