Schmidt participated in a training simulation of the mission to capture Sunstreaker. During the actual operation, he helped capture Sunstreaker while leaving a decoy corpse. Escalation #1
When the Machination field team transported the decoy Sunstreaker corpse, Schmidt was tasked with driving the transport truck. When Jazz and Wheeljack crashed the operation, Schmidt sped away, but was stopped by Optimus Prime who stood in the truck's path. Schmidt was killed in the resulting crash. Escalation #2
