The obsolescence chip is a tool for refining Cybertron's population according to the principles of functionism. When a class of Transformers is no longer deemed to have a function, their obsolescence chips are detonated in a mass recall.

- Although it exists in a different timeline, the obsolescence chip is reminiscent of the deterrence chip that the Autobots used to control their prisoners in Garrus-9 and its successor, the inhibitor/deterrence chip used to keep the Decepticons in line after the "Chaos" event.
