It existed over four million years ago and was where the Disciples of Boltax resided at the dawn of the Cybertronian Civil Wars. At the time, a young junior command officer of the Autobots called Optimus Prime journeyed to the Temple along with the Triggerbots in order to enlist the aid of the inhabitants of the Temple. Prime had hoped to use their help in stopping the war before it spread on Cybertron and after passing through several traps, they approach Boltax's Temple. The disciples allowed only Optimus Prime to pass and consult the knowledge in the Underbase.

However, the Decepticon's under the command of Megatron had followed them and sought to use the Underbase's power for their own ends. Destroying the Disciples, he wounds Optimus Prime in an attempt to claim the great power of the Underbase. Rather than allow Megatron to possess it, Optimus Prime manipulated the controls of the Temple of Knowledge and launched the Underbase on a never ending course through space in order to prevent its power from being taken by Megatron.
