- The U-Haul Robot is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family.
The U-Haul Robot was originally a slave of the Quintessons forced to participate in gladiatorial games.
Later, he was holder of the Matrix, and presumably leader of the Autobots.
Later still, Megatron killed him.
Bummer.
(Note: This robot was never named in fiction. The designation "U-Haul Robot" comes from the dialogue script for Five Faces of Darkness, part 4.)

The U-Haul Robot was an ancient Autobot on Cybertron more than 10 million years ago, prior to the rebellion against the Quintessons. The U-Haul Robot was forced to participate in gladiatorial games for the Quintessons' amusement, and wielded a spiked ball-and-chain weapon and a tire-shaped shield during this time. He was once defeated in battle by the "Powerful Robot" - who attacked their Quintesson masters when their match was over, only to be destroyed himself.

The U-Haul Robot rose to prominence as the Autobot-Decepticon conflict escalated, becoming Matrix-bearer at some point. When the Autobots invented the stealthy art of transforming, he was among the first to become a "Transformer," and afterwards participated in various conflicts against Decepticons. During these battles, he is known to have bumped a green robot off an elevated point with his vehicle mode and punched a pink robot in the stomach.
Some time after the Decepticons had acquired the secrets to transformation, the U-Haul Robot was killed by Megatron. As he died, he passed the Matrix to Alpha Trion, who would later give it to Optimus Prime.
In the year 2006, the U-Haul Robot served as a spirit guide to Rodimus Prime as he journeyed into the Matrix. FFoD4
