Synopsis
The abducted Breakaway has arrived in Science Minister Shockwave's lab, and both are visited by Megatron and Senator Ratbat. While Breakaway is restrained and offline, Megatron and Ratbat discuss his future. Ratbat reminds Megatron that killing Breakaway for experimentation purposes is against council intelligence guidelines, but Megatron and Shockwave argue that Breakaway is a special case.
At Shockwave's lab,Megatron presents the captured Breakaway to Senator Ratbat. Ratbat is incensed at Megatron's casual language, reminding the Decepticon that council guidelines prevent killing of offworlders. Megatron argues that this is a special case, and has Shockwave present what he's learned. Shockwave explains that with most offworlders, their technology has very little to teach the advanced TransTech. Breakaway, however, is one of the most advanced non-TransTech Cybertronians Shockwave has ever seen, with an unusual energon distribution system and several unique components. Breakaway can teach TransTech more than what they've learned in the past 10,000 stellar cycles, but Shockwave cannot continue without an invasive scan that Breakaway cannot survive. Ratbat considers, and tells Megatron and Shockwave that the Intelligence Committee will pass his recommendation to Optimus Prime.

Breakaway is far more advanced than any outworlder Shockwave has ever seen.  Studying him will lead to the most important biological discoveries in one thousand stellar cycles. However, the depth at which Shockwave would need to probe Breakaway to uncover these discoveries would necessarily end Breakaway's life. Ratbat agrees to put this request before Optimus Prime.
At Alpha Trion's workshop, Skyfall pulls out his weapon and accuses the old bot of killing multiple TransTech. Skyfall is interrupted by Topspin, Alpha Trion's assistant, who tells Skyfall that none of the TransTech are dead, as he carries a object containing a spark. Alpha Trion explains that Topspin has unique abilities, like Skyfall and his friends, and these talents will allow him to escape from Axiom Nexus. The old bot explains that the object Topspin is holding is a magnetic cage, able to hold and support a spark on his own, and points to a rack containing TransTech sparks. When Landquake asks about the sparks of normal Transformers, Alpha Trion explains that they are in the bodies of TransTech as agents within the system. Topspin shows his abilities to manipulate sparks off to Landquake, and proclaims that Alpha Trion will lead them to glory. Landquake simply agrees, and asks Topspin to show him how the magnetic cages work. Alpha Trion pulls Skyfall to the side, explaining that he intercepted scans of Skyfall and his friends when they arrived, finding similar systems as he did when Topspin arrived, and promises that he will help retrieve Breakaway. Skyfall demands he stop toying with Transformer' sparks, but the old bot brushes his concerns aside, telling him he has the codes for his home dimension, and that with Skyfall and his friends at his side, he will succeed. Alpha Trion shows Skyfall his sword, which originally belonged to a Decepticon named Slaughter. The sword contained engrams of Slaughter's personality, and its bearer is under constant assault by evil thoughts. Alpha Trion has had to bear the mental assault for years, and tells Skyfall that he wants him to take his sword if he dies in the upcoming battle...

Meanwhile, Skyfall has a very poor opinion of Alpha Trion and his ceiling of hanging corpses. Holding him at gunpoint, he demands an explanation. He and Landquake are introduced to Topspin, Alpha Trion's technician. He explains that these bodies are not corpses, but the result of attempts to move sparks from body to body, or from body to a magnetic cage; the transfer is a unique specialty of Topspin's. Using this procedure, they may be able to escape from Axiom Nexus to their originating universes.

Reluctantly, Skyfall and Landquake agree to team up with Alpha Trion and Topspin if it means they can rescue Breakaway. Alpha Trion turns to Skyfall and tells him that should he fall in the coming battle, Skyfall must take up his sword. It once belonged to a Decepticon leader named Slaughter, and its evil programming can warp the mind of its bearer. However, Alpha Trion believes Skyfall is strong enough of spark to resist its call.

Megatron and Senator Ratbat have secret plans for Breakaway.

Synopsis

Quotes

"The sword was not originally mine. It belonged to a Decepticon leader named 'Slaughter.' It contains much of his original programming, encrypted so deeply that it is impossible to change or remove. The bearer of the sword is under constant assault by the thoughts of an ancient and evil mind."
"You're kidding."

Alpha Trion and Skyfall have a heart-to-heart.

Notes

 • Senator Ratbat's design is by Alex Milne.
 • The 1-page preview comic for "I, Lowtech" which follows this story begins with 'meanwhile', indicating that this story occurs concurrently with that one.
