An energy absorber is a vital component of Transformer anatomy that allows them the capacity to refuel, presumably with energon.
Fiction

Starscream "neglected" to equip his newly created Combaticons with energy absorbers in order to control them. He told them to obey him and they would capture and remove the energy absorbers from other Transformers and equip them in the Combaticons. Starscream and the Combaticons kidnapped Jazz and Cliffjumper but Starscream refused to give their energy absorbers to the any of the Combaticons until they had three more, so he wouldn't be playing favorites. Ramjet and Dirge were left behind after a battle where Starscream failed to depose Megatron, bringing the number of available absorbers up to four.
