Playback's  only appearances were in Uk No's 230 and 231 both post mortem . A Noir Detective story entitled the Big Shutdown starring Nightbeat. The story was entitled the Big Shutdown a tribute to the Raymond Chandler novel the "Big Sleep" . Playbacks enntry on the Obscure Transformers Website by Jhiaxus and Monzo surmises that Playback's name is probably some kind of pun on Simon Furman's part

The only mention of Playback in fiction was in The Big Shutdown (Marvel UK issues #230-231), in which he was already dead. The story stars Nightbeat, who is often portrayed as a pulp fiction-style detective (even wearing a trenchcoat upon occasion). The title of the story is an obvious homage to the classic detective novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, and it is possible that writer Simon Furman took Playback's name from a different Chandler novel, Playback.

It would seem that it was in fact much simpler than that. A little research shows that Playback is the name of a Raymond Chandler Novel. His last completed Novel.

Fiction

The only mention of Playback in fiction was in The Big Shutdown (Marvel UK issues #230-231), in which he was already dead. The story stars Nightbeat, who is often portrayed as a pulp fiction-style detective (even wearing a trenchcoat upon occasion). The title of the story is an obvious homage to the classic detective novel The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, and it is possible that writer Simon Furman took Playback's name from a different Chandler novel, Playback.
