The mode lock is a restraining device from the Marvel portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The mode lock is a handy way to restrain a prisoner. When affixed it prevents the affected Transformer from transforming out of their alternate mode or taking any independent action except speaking. It also can be tracked to a radius of 50,000 miles. A mode locked Transformer can be controlled by radio.

The projectiles fired by Seekers were capable of temporarily mode locking any Autobot they hit. Curiously, this only applied to generic Seekers: Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp all lacked this ability.
