At the age of 18, he sold his first comics work to Centaur Comics, and worked for them briefly before moving to publisher Fiction House, where he worked on a number of their titles as art director. In 1950, he joined United Feature Syndicate, where he became famous for his work on Tarzan and Secret Agent X-9. He also took over drawing, and eventually writing, UFS's syndicated comic Long Sam.
