When the Cybertron from the Functionist Universe threatened the primary universe, the crew of the Lost Light realized that they needed to use twelve Matrixes on the planet's twelve hot spots in order to destroy the Functionist Council and stop their onslaught. Ultra Magnus and Whirl were sent to Mesmerica, where they were met with resistance from the Functionists' forces. While Ultra Magnus was blasted out of his armor before he could use the Matrix, a severely injured Whirl was able to recover it and open it after a rousing speech from Rodimus, destroying the Functionist Council through the hot spot's connection to Vector Sigma.
