Trypticon is finally stopped, but the mastermind behind it all has a few words for the Transformers.

Synopsis

Those left still standing stare up at Trypticon, who has grown exponentially larger after absorbing the power of the Matrix of Leadership, with Overlord watching from a distance. However, Trypticon shifts back to normal size and a beam of light streams from his open mouth, from which the Matrix, Perceptor, Victorion and the Enigma of Combination emerge. Optimus Prime explains that the Matrix's power can only be accessed by those it chooses and had rejected Trypticon, as Perceptor and the Matrix itself had planned. Suddenly, Trypticon shakes and the ghost of Starscream emerges from within him. He laughs and vanishes as Trypticon deactivates once more, Fortress Maximus catching him before he falls. He laments the loss of another Titan, but Optimus reassures him that it is not his fault. Victorion attempts to reclaim the Enigma, but flames surround it and the Matrix, burning her on contact and destroying most of her right arm. A face appears in the flames, announcing its return.

Windblade attempts to throw her sword at the being, but it is instantly incinerated. Confirming Optimus's fears, the being declares that the time of the Transformers is at an end. Already knowing their attacker's identity, Megatron steps forward as the face morphs into a robotic form, announcing himself as Megatronus, the first Decepticon. Megatron states that from his earliest days, he has followed in Megatronus's footsteps, seeking to build his empire and carrying out conquest in his name. But, as Megatron points out, that war was ultimately lost, costing him everything, and he asks what Megatronus has ever done for him. Optimus signals Fortress Maximus, who attempts to strike Megatronus with his Master Sword as Optimus charges forth with his energon-axe. However, Megatronus repels Maximus, knocking him away, and fires a blast through Optimus's chest, killing him. As no one else dares step forth to attack Megatronus, he takes the Enigma and the Matrix for his own, telling the others to make the most of their remaining time as he blasts off into the sky.

In the aftermath, the others mourn Optimus's death, angrily rebuking Megatron for his seeming intent to revive the Decepticons. However, Megatron states that his words were an attempt to stall for time so Optimus and Maximus could strike. With Megatronus clearly outclassing all of them, Megatron asserts that they'll need to work together to survive, and that he knows where Megatronus is headed. Though the others continue to distrust him, he asks them to follow his guidance and they hesitantly accept. Elsewhere, Overlord ponders this turn of events, flanked by his newest ally: Hot Rod, now corrupted by darkness.

To be continued.

Quotes

"Starscream...lords of Tarn, can't you ever just stay dead?!"
"Dead? [laughs and sighs] That's funny. Actually, I feel...reborn."

Megatron is less than thrilled to see Starscream as he passes on.

"Lost children of my children's children...bickering, whining, endlessly skirmishing metal playthings...be awoken, for the fire has arrived."

Megatronus heralds his own return.

"You have enjoyed a millennia of recess in the absence of your pedagogues. You have spread your borrowed sparks across the blackness of space, and now your curfew is nigh."

Megatronus says playtime is over.

"God walks among you now."

Megatronus has a Titan-sized ego.

"From my earliest days of gladiatorial combat, I carried a likeness of your name as a symbol. A symbol of the empire you sought to build. I bore the weight of the mission you began. I ruled planets, commanded armies, fought so many wars in your name."
"You are acknowledged. Now make your point."
"We lost, goddamn you! I've been banished, stripped of my title, and abandoned by my troops! You claim to be our god, but what have you done for us?! More importantly, what are you going to do for me?"

Megatron is in no mood to pay Megatronus homage.

"Enjoy your final days, Transformers, because in the end, no sentient being lasts forever. ...Well, almost no sentient being."

Megatronus makes his exit.

"Can we just kill him already?!"

Menasor is out for Megatron's blood.

"The question isn't 'where', Perceptor. The question is...will you all follow me there?"

Megatron lays down his ultimatum.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • This isn't the first time Optimus Prime has died in this continuity, as Megatron indicated back in "The Fight Begins" that he'd killed Optimus at least once before.
  • Overlord previously corrupted Hot Rod back in "At the Last Second"; this is the first time we see the results.

Transformers references

  • Megatron makes passing mention of Tarn.
  • While primarily going by his true name, Megatron does once refer to Megatronus as "The Fallen", his more frequently used title in other Transformers media.
  • Megatron references his gladiatorial days and deriving his own name from Megatronus, akin to his depictions in the Aligned and 2005 IDW continuities.
  • Fortress Maximus pulls out the Master Sword to attack Megatronus, something that is almost never used in non-Japanese media.
  • Optimus Prime dies? You don't say.

Errors

Continuity errors

  • For as often as characters stated Emissary would be needed for Fortress Maximus to win, he never actually bonded with Maximus or meaningfully helped him out in battle throughout the whole series.
  • Like Menasor with his parts back in "The Fall", no mention is made of Dust Up when Victorion's arm is burned. For all intents and purposes, it's treated only as a damaged limb, despite this series establishing the bots who make up Combiners' parts as individual entities capable of existing outside of the Combiner itself.

Trivia

  • This episode was delayed from its original planned release time by nearly nine and a half hours, possibly to coincide with the cast announcement for Power of the Primes which was revealed at roughly the same time.
  • Megatronus's design is reminiscent of his Aligned continuity design (having a blocky shape, what seems to be fusion cannons, and having enlarged shoulders as well as being called "the first Decepticon"), but here the Revenge of the Fallen aspects of that design are furthered (having a similar red-and-black color scheme, an Egyptian-crown-like head, and remaining sigil-less). And of course, the famed fiery aspect originated from his Dreamwave self. This design would later reappear in Transformers: Forged to Fight, which also gave it a Cybertronian jet alternate mode.
  • And so the Titans have returned. Metroplex accomplished nothing before being crushed by Trypticon, Trypticon stomped around a city for a while before falling over and dying because Starscream left, and Fortress Maximus was utterly inconsequential when it came to stopping Trypticon, the very thing he was awoken to do.
