Hashtag and camera-bot [[Longtooth]] move in for a closer look, while the Joes and [[Ironhide (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Ironhide]]'s security forces begin evacuating the area. [[Windblade (G1)|Windblade]] spots a robot standing in the middle of the chaos who is not moving, but when she attempts to get them to safety, the mechanoid reveals itself to be a Trojan horse as it opens up to release a small army of the biomechanical ninja known as the [[Red Shadows]]! One by one, other robots in the crowd do the same, unleashing more ninja, [[Iron Grenadier]] robot troopers, the [[Dreadnok]]s, and the mastermind of the whole evil operation, "Baron Ironblood"! On the day of Earth's induction into the Cybertronian Council of Worlds, Baron Ironblood strikes!

Synopsis

The day has finally arrived: after months of discord following Optimus Prime's annexation of the planet, Earth is about to be inducted into the Cybertronian Council of Worlds, with Marissa Faireborn as its representative. With breathable atmosphere pumped into Iacon and kept in place by a forcefield courtesy of Metroplex, Marissa and the other human dignitaries all travel to Cybertron for the ceremony, with Flint's G.I. Joe team as bodyguards, while the whole shebang is covered live by Joe newscaster Hashtag and Iacon Communication Service reporter Circuit, the broadcast beamed via Spacebridge signal back to television audiences on Earth. Those audiences include Scarlett's Earthbound Joe team, who keep themselves entertained by cracking jokes about the formal wear their teammates on Cybertron have been forced to wear, with Skywarp even joining in to highlight the superiority of Camien fashion over Cybertronian. Scarlett herself doesn't share in her team's levity; though she believes in Optimus Prime's good intentions, she cannot help by worry that humanity is perpetually out of its weight class in the conflicts which contact with Cybertron seems to result in.

As ruler of Cybertron, Starscream takes the podium to begin the ceremony, but before he can get three words out, a huge explosion suddenly rocks the area. Hashtag and camera-bot Longtooth move in for a closer look, while the Joes and Ironhide's security forces begin evacuating the area. Windblade spots a robot standing in the middle of the chaos who is not moving, but when she attempts to get them to safety, the mechanoid reveals itself to be a Trojan horse as it opens up to release a small army of the biomechanical ninja known as the Red Shadows! One by one, other robots in the crowd do the same, unleashing more ninja, Iron Grenadier robot troopers, the Dreadnoks, and the mastermind of the whole evil operation, "Baron Ironblood"! As Ironblood's forces target non-combatants and sow panic in the crowd, Ironhide, realizing most of these invaders are not fully human, authorizes lethal force, while Starscream orders the Spacebridge shut down to contain the situation.

With the deactivation of the bridge, Hashtag's broadcast cuts out, and Scarlett's Joes scramble for a plan of action. During the team's recent encounter with Baron Ironblood, they discovered that, underneath his helmet, he is actually their founder Joe Colton—which would be bad enough news on its own, if facial recognition scans of the video of the attack did not also identify prominent Cobra members Destro and Storm Shadow among his retinue. Scarlett observes that the villains' troop movements on Cybertron are disorganized, unlike anything the Colton she knew would put together, giving her some hope that all is not as it appears.

Cross-referencing Ironblood's activities with Colton's files leads the Joes to a bunker in the Swiss Alps. Doc is able to easily hack its electronic lock and grant the team access, and the absence of any obvious guards makes it look like the mission will be a smooth one... right up until their way is barred by oscillating laser beams. Worse yet, as Quick Kick vaults his way through the beams to deactivate them from the other side, a platoon of Iron Grenadiers comes running up on the Joes, seemingly leaving no room for doubt over which side Colton is really on. Once Quick Kick has turned off the beams, a running gunfight ensues through the base's corridors, until the Joes hit a door sealed by a passcode Doc cannot crack. Fortunately, Scarlett figures it out in a flash: 96563, or YOJOE. Shutting the door behind them to keep the Grenadiers off their tail, the Joes venture deeper into the base, where they discover Colton's nerve center—a replica of his old office, right down to the rustic computer. Knowing that Colton would never store important information digitally, Scarlett locates a floor safe, which turns out to be keyed to open at her fingerprints. Inside, she finds a letter addressed to her, in which Colton expresses his regret over the inevitable fact that she will try to stop him from what he is doing, but vows that Cybertron will be destroyed in order to protect Earth.

Meanwhile, on Cybertron, with the Transformers occupied battling the Red Shadows and Grenadiers, Ironblood orders Destro and Storm Shadow to roll into action, as the next phase of the villains' plan begins!

In addition to this 20-page main story, First Strike #1 also includes the four-page first chapter of an ongoing back-up strip, "The Origins of Evil," detailing how Ironblood assembled his evil allies.

IDW continuity notes

  • This issue opens with a flashback to The Transformers #49, including dialogue cribbed from Optimus Prime's annexation speech. The flashback even correctly presents Optimus in the body he had from The Transformers "season 2" until Revolution, in contrast to his current body which debuted in Optimus Prime #1.
  • Aruna Singh is the G.I. Joe "Hashtag", an IDW-original character who previously appeared from 2013-2014 in {{#if:G.I. Joe vol. 3|G.I. Joe vol. 3|G.I. Joe vol. 3}}. She self-identifies as a Joe in this story, but it seems like she might have retired from the military; when last seen in 2014's {{#if:G.I. Joe vol 3. #15|G.I. Joe vol 3. #15|Siren's Song: Conclusion}}, she was definitely feeling emotionally troubled by the Joes' work. It appears she's been working on her journalistic career instead, using her codename as the name of her news show.
  • The fact that the president had chosen Marissa Faireborn as Earth's representative to Cybertron was alluded to in Optimus Prime #9, but hadn't been outright stated before now; it kinda feels like maybe that was supposed to happen before this issue got released (in Optimus Prime #10, presumably), especially since the original preview for this issue in First Strike #0 actually cut off the first page, so as to not reveal Marissa's new job.
  • The Combaticons are seen serving as Starscream's personal guards following the events of Till All Are One #11. Windblade is also up and about again following injuries sustained in Till All Are One #8, which she recovered from in issue #12, published on the same day as First Strike #1.
  • Surprised to see Skywarp among the ranks of G.I. Joe? Then you've obviously not been reading G.I. Joe vol. 5, in which he is a regular character, having joined up with the team after the events of the G.I. Joe: Revolution one-shot.
  • Scarlett remarks that Cybertron has dragged Earth into "two and a half" different wars; we're not sure how she's counting, but presumably that refers to some combination of the metal planet's own civil war, the recent Junkion crisis, and Baron Karza's invasion from Microspace in the Wrath of Karza mini-series... with the "half" probably relating to the Dire Wraith/Karza "team-up" from Revolution...?
  • Baron Ironblood and his villainous alliance have been the principal villains of the eight-issue Revolutionaries series that has run the gap between Revolution and First Strike. Unfortunately, at the time of his issue's publication, Revolutionaries was running two full months late; issue #7 contained the unmasking of Baron Ironblood to reveal he was Joe Colton (though a footnote in this issue credits Revolutionaries #8 with the reveal), and was supposed to have been released prior to First Strike #1, but in practice, came out the week after, the reveal spoiled by this issue.
  • Flashbacks appearing alongside the narration from Colton's letter show Colton's encounter with Soundwave, thirty-odd years prior, as chronicled in Revolutionaries #3.
  • Surprised to see Dial Tone as a woman and not a man? That is indeed the case with IDW incarnation of Dial Tone.

Transformers references

  • On Retailer Incentive Cover B, Cybertron is drawn with the "honeycomb" appearance it had in the Dark of the Moon film.
  • A purple insectoid Transformer is shown from behind in the crowd scene on page 2, who looks to be the BotCon 1998-original Beast Wars character Antagony. As the only full-color character on the page who isn't a pre-established IDW cast member, we'll assume she's going to be important later!
  • Marissa's dress is a "Barber original", referring to Transformers comic book writer John Barber, who's been responsible for writing pretty much all of Marissa's IDW stories so far.
  • Beginning with this issue, like Optimus Prime and Starscream before her, Windblade is now drawn based on her "evergreen" character design, created by Hasbro for use in licensed materials not tied to a particular toyline or film/animation project.

G.I. Joe references

  • The vehicle that Destro and Storm Shadow roll out in on the issue's final page is a Razorback, a combat vehicle from the "Iron Grenadiers" sub-range of figures, released in 1989.
  • The fact that Ironblood's base is located in the Swiss Alps may be a reference to his backstory in Action Force, where he was the son of a Swiss diplomat (albeit raised and schooled in Britain).

Errors

  • Hashtag refers to Iacon as the "Cybertronian capitol" when it should be "capital". A capital is a city; a capitol is a legislative building or building complex, not the entire city.
  • On page 7, when Optimus says to get Starscream and Marissa to Echo Point, Starscream is flanked by what appears to be two Onslaughts. One of these is a miscoloured Brawl; the same miscolouration is repeated in a panel further down the page.
