The Laser Rod is Optimus Prime's personal blade in his "Laser" body.

Upon his defeat at the hands of Megatron, the spirits of the fallen Autobot commanders residing within the Matrix activated the Reconfiguration Matrix and resurrected Optimus Prime as Battle Convoy. Notes

• Generation 2 Laser Optimus Prime's sword was merely referred to as a "saber weapon" in its initial Hasbro release. By contrast, the associated Japanese fiction described it as a specialized Cybertonium blade. Almost two decades later, it received the name "Laser Rod" for the United toy release, which was used again for Earth Wars, presumably because Simon Furman was involved in writing both.
