Optimus Prime and Megatron receive visions of a dark future while trapped in the Dead Universe.

Synopsis

Long ago, Alpha Trion carries both the Staff of Solus and the Matrix. Suddenly, Sky Lynx blocks the path of the venerable elder and demands that Trion give him the Matrix. Instead, Trion berates him, since he fails to realize that the Matrix should not be won with simple power and arrogance. Furious, Sky Lynx charges at Trion, but Trion uses the Staff to open a portal, banishing him far, far away...

In the present, Optimus Prime and his crew aboard the Ark are baffled as to their current location, only vaguely concluding that they're in some sort of "un-space". However, the appearance of Sky Lynx on the viewscreen confirms to Prime that the Autobots find themselves in the Dead Universe. Sky Lynx quickly demonstrates his complete mastery over this realm, and teleports Prime to a private area in un-space so that Sky Lynx may judge his worthiness to bear the Matrix. Prime informs Sky Lynx about the mission to retrieve the Allspark, while Sky Lynx reveals his long mission as well—his quest to calm the inner storm that drove him to banishment. Alpha Trion's punishment gave him time to become more stoic and to relinquish his craving for the power of the Matrix. Now, he only seeks redemption for his past behavior, and to be freed from the Dead Universe.

He guides Prime through the Dead Universe, a realm where thought is power. Prime's inner turmoil manifests as painful memories of his pledge to Alpha Trion, to protect Cybertron with Megatron and Ultra Magnus. Sky Lynx accompanies the angst-ridden Prime as he reflects on the death and destruction of so many on his homeworld. He confronts a deep fear: that Elita and all his Autobots will die on Cybertron under the tyrannical rule of Megatron, and that Cybertron itself will be destroyed due to his removal of the Allspark.

Sky Lynx enjoins Prime to let go of the self-blame; if he doesn't, he can never escape the Dead Universe. He is greeted with further visions: witnessing his own death; bombardment of meteors in an icy mountain range; even a terrifying evil reflection of himself. Sky Lynx helps Prime to focus his thoughts, and use the Matrix as a guide to the Allspark. Prime finally unleashes the power of the Matrix, opening a fissure out of the Dead Universe!

Aboard the Nemesis, Starscream awakens to see a portal just ahead of him in space. Before he can figure out what it means, Megatron arrives on the bridge, ready to pay Starscream back for his treachery, knocking him flat with a punch. After banishing Starscream from the bridge, Megatron orders Barricade to take the Nemesis into the rift to pursue Prime. Within the rift, the Nemesis is subjected to stresses and mysterious light, sending Megatron crashing to the ground. As he recovers, a new surprise awaits: a mysterious purple Decepticon materializes in front of Megatron, laughing at him!

The mysterious figure only introduces himself to Megatron as a guide to the future, being careful to not reveal too much information. Megatron wants no help and lashes out, but the intruder easily matches him in strength and counters Megatron's attacks with suspicious familiarity. The two fire their arm-mounted cannons at each other, somehow transporting them to a strange location within the Dead Universe. The guide tells Megatron that even though the risk taken to arrive here and now was great, it will be all worth it if Megatron can kill Optimus Prime, whose death will cause the guide to no longer exist! Megatron relents and is prepared to listen.

And this—is to go even further—beyond!

The guide emphasizes the importance of taking the Matrix and killing Prime, taking Megatron on a journey through his past, telling him that the Prime is part of a legacy that seeks to suppress those whose strength was forged in the gladiator pits. Megatron remembers that only his self-reliance and strength kept him alive, not trust; hatred was his source of power. Megatron confesses that the guide truly understands him. The guide agrees; after all, the pits are where they both were born. Despite his strength, the guide explains that he is still a slave in his thrall, and that Megatron must master his fate before he realizes the guide's treachery!

On the Nemesis, Megatron and the guide see the Ark only moments away from exiting the Dead Universe. The guide tells Megatron to channel his hate and rage, and soon he is brimming with crimson, coruscating energy, unleashing it as a powerful beam towards the Ark. However, Sky Lynx soars between the beam and the Ark, taking the full brunt of the beam as he implores Prime to escape. Sky Lynx is atomized, but the Ark makes it through the rift.

The guide tries to get Megatron to pursue them, but they are stopped as he intervenes, summoning the guide painfully back from where he came. The guide attempts to give Megatron something that might help him vanquish the Prime, but it quickly dissipates, and the guide vanishes. The Nemesis pursues the Ark through the rift.

Both spacecraft find themselves in orbit over a watery, blue world—Earth!
