Nyx was part of Optimus Primal's skeleton crew aboard the Maximal research vessel Axalon, and served as the ship's helmsman. While en route to H'nkshanaar-4 as part of a routine protoform delivery mission, the crew recieved a transmission from Maximal leader Ironhide, who warned them that a group of Predacon separatists had stolen a valuable relic and fled aboard a transwarp-capable warship. In the ensuing battle, Nyx's evasive maneuvers helped the lightly-armed Axalon keep up with the heavily-armed Darksyde—and when the Predacon ship jumped through time, Nyx and Rhinox used a transwarp lock to follow it across time and space and re-emerged above an alien planet. With their weapons disabled thanks to a surprise attack, Nyx made a last-resort move by simply ramming the Axalon into the Darksyde, but this unconventional tactic wound up pushing both ships directly into the planet's atmosphere. The two ships crash-landed on opposite ends of a lush valley and knocked their passengers into stasis lock; once the ship's artifiical intelligences had rebooted, however, it detected toxic levels of energon radiation outside and reformatted the five Maximals into beast modes based on the local lifeforms. Notes

• Nyx was designed in homage to the bat Optimus Primal toy (also known as Convobat in Japan).
• Nyx is named for the primordial deity of the night in Greek mythology as well as a shout out to Onyx Primal, a redeco of the aforementioned bat Optimus Primal figure. toy.
