Merlin was believed by many, including King Arthur, to be a wizard of great power. However, he possessed no actual mystical abilities and was a drunkard and womanizer. When the king called on him to aid in his battle against the Saxons, Merlin took a detour, while sipping copious amounts of alcohol, to visit a hidden Cybertronian ship. He was one of the few who knew of the Knights of Iacon on Earth and had kept their secret. He told his story to them, begging them to help him change the world for the better, even offering to give up wine and money, but not women. He compared the bravery of Arthur and his men to the Cybertronians and their battle to the loss of Cybertron. Moved by his words, the knights bequeathed him a Cybertronian staff before combining into the mighty Dragonstorm, who Merlin led to the battlefield.

The beast made short work of King Arthur's enemies. The staff also bonded to Merlin's DNA, allowing only he and those of his bloodline to wield it and charging him to protect it when a great evil would come for it. The staff gave Merlin access to highly advanced science beyond human comprehension, which was known as magic at the time. When he died, he was buried with the staff in a Cybertronian ship at the bottom of the ocean to protect it, with the knights themselves taking up sentry over his tomb.

Viviane Wembly, his last descendant and an English Literature professor who knew his legend extensively, believed that Merlin did not even exist until her ancestry was revealed to her by Sir Edmund Burton. She later found his tomb within the Knights' ship and retrieved the staff from his decomposed body. Unfortunately, the disoriented knight Skullitron awoke and, in an attempt to protect the staff, wound up destroying Merlin's remains. Viviane would eventually fulfill Merlin's duty and protect the staff and save Earth from its original owner, Quintessa. The Last Knight

Notes

• Merlin's actor, Stanley Tucci, previously played KSI CEO Joshua Joyce in Transformers: Age of Extinction. In the months leading up to the film, it was believed Tucci was set to reprise his role as Joyce in Transformers: The Last Knight, until the film's release revealed he had been cast as a new character.
• The Witwiccan family tree gives Merlin's wife as Viviane, better known as the [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Lady of the Lake|{{#if:||Lady of the Lake}}]]. In Arthurian lore, she imprisoned Merlin in either a tree or under a great stone after getting Merlin to teach her his secrets.
