A collective of seemingly all-knowing entities monitor events and ongoings in the universe.
A monstrous predator travels though space, reawakened and hungry for nourishment, consuming the planet Lithone. The entities watching this note that it is moving faster than they anticipated, and worse, growing stronger with each planet it consumes. The entities determine it's heading for Earth, doubtless seeking the same thing as they are. In the meantime, it's using the resources it has acquired to create new forms of life, stronger and more dangerous than its previous efforts. Inside the monstrosity, the first of these creations bursts forth from its pod.
One of entities asks after the first wave, the one sent out before "it" went into hibernation. That scattered across the cosmos to cover as much territory as possible, with the Alpha Drone, Scourge finding Cybertron, with its inhabitants all deactivated. They determine Scourge was the one who reactivated Shockwave in an attempt to gain information, only to reveal himself saving Shockwave from an extermination unit of Sharkticons left behind by their masters, at which point Shockwave shot him in the back. The entities theorize that studying Scourge is how Shockwave managed to acquire so much knowledge about Cybertron and its origins. They also speculate about how Scourge was recently seen on Earth, but are unclear on how he could've escaped Shockwave's clutches. All they know is that it was incapacitated by Shockwave and taken in by the planet's inhabitants, along with the remains of the Constructicons and the Aerialbots.
Some of Optimus Prime's forces remain in hiding on Earth, and have recently gotten in contact with Cybertron, where Optimus is still in a weakened state after his battle with Shockwave. One of the entities observes that much has occurred over the last two years, but another notes the benefits for them. The chaos has allowed them to remain hidden, and collect enough data to get close to their real objective, and the chance to strike. The only real loose end is Megatron, missing since his apparent death after Shockwave arrived on Earth. Despite their best efforts, the inhabitants of Quintessa have yet to find his corpse. But they aren't too concerned. Sooner or later, Megatron will face the judgement of the Quintessons, no matter where he's hiding.
The letters column of issue #2 mentioned that issue #0 will never be reprinted, and, to date, that statement is true - although this has a lot to do with IDW Publishing's reluctance to reprint even completed arcs of those series still ongoing when Dreamwave folded due to the bankrupt company's failure to pay creators working on them, meaning none of the series has been collected!
Continuity notes
Unicron was woken up by Shockwave's machinations back in "Countdown to Extinction". Unlike previous continuities, it seems the planet eater's motivation this time is not to gnosh on Cybertron, but Earth. Why, and whatever the mysterious "it" that is drawing him to Earth that the Quintessons are after is, is another of those plot points that went unexplained before Dreamwave folded.
Shockwave's encounter with, and subsequent back-stabbing-of, Scourge was first glimpsed in "Cold War". Scourge is also the one responsible for reviving Shockwave from the Great Shutdown, previously seen during his flashback in "Revelation". Scourge appeared on Earth seconds before getting shot by Shockers in "New World Order". "Cold War" also showed that Scourge had been appropriated by humans, with Jazz's team unaware of this. This issue adds the additional detail that whoever these humans are, they've also got the remains of Superion, who flew into a nuke in "Prime Directive issue 6", and Devastator, last seen falling into the water after being blasted in the face by Prime in "Prime Directive issue 5", as well. It turns out Devastator's not waterproof. Despite totally being waterproof.
However, The Transformers Trilogy revealed Superion's remains to have been collected and taken into custody by Hugo Fortuna, while Devastator, in stasis lock, had been found floating in outer space and brought back to Earth by the secret U.S. government starship Bounty.
Additionally, the flashback of Shockwave's attack by Sharkticons at the time never really explained what they were doing on Cybertron. Now we know.
Shockwave forcibly seized the Matrix from Optimus back in "Countdown to Extinction". Despite the next issue showing Optimus apparently being fine, it turns out his injuries were rather move severe than they looked. He'll be out of action for the remainder of Dreamwave's continuity.
Among the montage of the chaos of the previous two years is the destruction of the Ark II, as happened in the backstory of Prime Directive, and Ultra Magnus shedding his armor (a dramatized depiction of events from War and Peace)
The Quints want revenge on Megatron for an unspecified betrayal. The later-published War Within: The Age of Wrath would show Megatron and the Quintessons had worked together at a point in the past, which ended in some mutual back-stabbing.
Starscream nearly killed Megatron in "New World Order", but Wreck-Gar found and revived him at the end of "Revelation". He's doing a lot better now, but with the addition of funky black speech bubbles.
Transformers references
Lithone is destroyed at the start of the issue, much like in The Transformers: The Movie, however it is unknown if there were any survivors in this continuity. Doesn't look like it, though.
The depiction of Unicron's interior also takes a lot of visual cues from the movie, including his ring and spines lighting up after he's consumed a planet, and the interior having a sphere covered in TV screens.
The guards of the Quintessons aren't identified by name, but they are Firestar and Moonracer, previously only seen in the Transformers episode "The Search for Alpha Trion".
Real-life references
Wreck-Gar is singing the song "Heigh-Ho" from [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937 film)|{{#if:Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs|Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs|Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937 film)}}]] and he later quotes [[wikipedia:{{#if:|:}}Ricky Ricardo|{{#if:||Ricky Ricardo}}]]. This is the first known example in Transformers canon of Megatron being referred to as "Lucy".
