War of Dreams covers events similar to those of The Headmasters episodes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, and 18.
The Transformers' backstory as briefly related in the novel features two retcons regarding the dating of past events compared with the dates previously established in The Transformers:
- The Transformers' rebellion against the Quintessons is dated to six million years ago rather than circa 12 million years.
- More bizarrely, the events of the Unicron War are dated to four million years ago, complete with Rodimus Prime and Galvatron being namechecked.
