The Timaeus drive is a technology from the Alternity portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Typically integrated into the auto-avatars of the Alternity, Timaeus drives are the means by which these mechanical constructs travel between universal streams. Working in conjunction with a sub-component known as the powertrack generator, the Timaeus drive manifests an energy construct that may be perceived by lower-dimensional beings as a closed race-track roughly 80 meters in diameter. This energy construct solidifies at the intended destination and bridges the dimensional gap, creating a surface for the auto-avatar to arrive on.

It was the ultimate result of the Timaeus Project on Earth, an endeavor which led to the first instances of Cybertronians becoming Alternity. Accordingly, the Alternity closely monitor the timeline it originated in, dispatching Protectors to safeguard it due to the difficulty of intervening in their own collective past.

Fiction

Binaltech continuity

Taking place in the Binaltech research facility in Autobot City, the Timaeus Project required the Autobot Arcee, her spark placed in an experimental Binaltech body, to wear a consciousness-enhancing device near her brain while driving through a circular loop equipped with an acceleration field at a steady speed of 715 kilometers per hour. She did not especially understand what this would achieve, but Autobot scientist Perceptor assured her that it was a revolutionary new way to generate a super-dimensional space.

Notes

  • The name is a reference to one of Plato's dialogues Timaios (Τίμαιος), more commonly known in English by its Latinization, Timaeus. The dialogue speculates on the true nature of the physical world, and is often paired up with Kritias, which provides the name for the Critias Gate.
