"Cave brutes" are a type of lifeform that inhabitats the tunnels beneath the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Or at least they did 1898.

Walter Simmons and Theodore Joseph Wells encountered the cave brutes while on an expedition. Since they growled at the two humans, Wells saw it fit to shoot at them.
