The War Within is a six-part miniseries written by Simon Furman, depicting the early days of the Autobot/Decepticon war. The Dreamwave Productions series was successful enough to lead to two sequel series.
Artist Don Figueroa redesigned dozens of Generation 1 characters for the series, giving them Cybertronian vehicle modes: the designs for Optimus Prime, Thundercracker (recolored into Starscream and Sunstorm), and Megatron were made into toys in the Titanium Series toy lines, and Starscream's was adapted into Unicron Trilogy Starscream's Cybertron form. Also from the Titanium line, designs for Grimlock and Prowl are in limbo.

Errors
- On the back cover of the trade paperback collection, "Transformers", in one place, is spelled "Transfrormers".
Trivia
- Though the individual comics from Dreamwave were titled Transformers: The War Within, the collected volume from IDW Publishing is titled Transformers: War Within, possibly for trademark reasons.
