Seeking to discover a way to safeguard against energon overload while in robot mode, Fractyl developed a substance he called furmanite on prehistoric Earth. After Fractyl successfully tested its energon-shielding properties, Packrat stole the furmanite; in the chaos, it was discovered to be anti-energon when shards of furmanite explosively reacted with pure energon.

The furmanite was infused into Packrat's structure, and he threatened the planet by travelling into the Badlands, an energon-rich area. Despite some reluctance and arrogance, Packrat allowed the furmanite to be siphoned from his body when he was convinced by Rhinox to do so. Ground Zero
