The hapless Sludge is a member of the Lightning Strike Coalition, serving under the command of Grimlock.

Sludge and the rest of the Lightning Strike Coalition deserted their posts defending the Ark to look into some strange energy readings.
It didn't go very well for Sludge. Jazz later found Sludge's remains grafted to a wall after an Insecticons attack, missing his arm. Jazz's later actions filled the area Sludge had been found in with toxic... er... sludge. Sludge's (The Transformer, not the goo) memory core, however, was retrieved by the Autobot.
