His film career began in 1932, and Stander played a long succession of tough guys and hoods for the next twenty years until 1953, when he was outed as a member of the Communist Party to the House Un-American Activities Committee and blacklisted. After spending fifteen years acting in Europe, Stander returned to America, where he appeared in Steven Spielberg's 1941.
