Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — The Score is an album featuring the original instrumental music composed by Steve Jablonsky for the live-action sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Unlike the delayed limited release of the first movie's score album, this score was released by Reprise Records on June 23, 2009, the same day as Revenge of the Fallen's rock/pop album. The digital download version was released even earlier, on June 12 in the United Kingdom.
Tracks
- Prime (2:14) — Suite piece; Jetfire telling the history of the Primes; Optimus' body is brought to the mourning NEST teams.
- Einstein's Wrong (3:35) — Sam has a 'full blown mental meltdown' in Professor Colan's class; Simmons briefs Sam on what he knows of the Cybertronian history on Earth.
- NEST (2:08) — NEST gears up to fight Demolishor; Optimus and Bumblebee saving Sam, Mikaela, and Leo from Megatron, Starscream, and the Doctor.[1]
- The Shard (2:42) — Arcee and Sideswipe chase Sideways; The kitchen appliances come to life in the Witwickys' home; Ravage steals the AllSpark fragment from Diego Garcia; Alice chasing after Sam, Mikaela, and Leo through the campus library; Grindor kidnapping Sam, Mikaela, and Leo; Bumblebee fighting Rampage.
- The Fallen (4:03) — Suite piece; Galloway debates against Optimus at NEST HQ; The Doctor examines Sam
- Infinite White (3:58) — Tail end played when Sam's group reaches Petra.
- Heed Our Warning (4:26) — The song was never used in Revenge of the Fallen, but part of it was put in Dark of the Moon when the Decepticons destroy Chicago.
- The Fallen's Arrival (3:47) — Optimus Prime's death prompts Decepticon attacks across the globe.
- Tomb Of The Primes (2:47) — Sam, Mikaela, Leo, and Simmons find the Matrix of Leadership in the Tomb of the Primes.
- Forest Battle (2:04) — Optimus battles Megatron, Starscream and Grindor.[2]
- Precious Cargo (1:38) — Sam and Mikaela make their way toward NEST's position with the Matrix of Leadership
- Matrix Of Leadership (3:50) — Sam encounters the Primes and resurrects Optimus[3]
- I Claim Your Sun (3:06) — The Fallen steals the Matrix and activates the Star Harvester; Jetfire is combined with Optimus; Optimus destroys the harvester; Optimus fights The Fallen and Megatron.[2]
- I Rise, You Fall (3:35) — Optimus defeats the Fallen.[4]
Recording Session Cue Sheet
As with most film scores, the original album is an incomplete representation of the score, often abridged to fit on one disc and re-arranged for the average listener's experience in mind. Even so, the on-the-fly nature of the film's production resulted both in the recording of a fairly large number of alternate cues and extensive edits of existing tracks to better fit the film.
Though much of it has fallen victim to leaks, the entire complete score remains unavailable, but the scoring session titles are as follows:
- 1m01v7 17,000 BC (1:25) — In the Past, primitive hunters discover the Sun Harvester and run afoul of the Fallen.
- 1m02v05 Shanghai (1:02) — Morshower maneuvers NEST teams in present-day Shanghai.
- 1m03v6 Soldiers and Ironhide Get Ready (1:24) — The NEST team arrives on the scene in Shanghai.
- 1m03bv3.2 Autobots Into Action (0:52) — Ironhide transforms as the NEST soldiers close in on Demolishor's signal. The ending is slightly tweaked in the film.
- 1m04v1.6 Audibot (0:41) - Unused cue presumably composed with Sideways in mind.
- 1m04-5v1.4 Audibot Joins In and Splits (1:49) — Sideswipe, Arcee, Chromia, Elita-One and the Twins chase down Sideways.
- 1m05v1.16 Wheelbot On The Bridge (1:05) — Demolishor rampages through Shanghai as Optimus dives down to confront him. Unused in the movie proper.
- 1m5a Pt1v9 Optimus To The Rescue (0:49) — Optimus dives into Shanghai to confront Demolishor. In the film, the beginning is swapped for that of "Optimus To The Rescue (Short)."
- 1m05a Pt2v4 The Fallen Shall Rise Again (0:29) Demolishor's last words. Replaced with a short mix of "The Fallen's Lair" in the film.
- 1m05bvFilm Sam Off To College (1:29) — Sam and his parents pack his things up for college.
- 1m07v4.21 The Shard Drops (2:15) — The Allspark Shard imparts its knowledge to Sam, then falls and brings the Appliancebots to life. A second part of the track, which corresponds to Bumblebee transforming and dispatching the robots, went unused in the film. A portion of the string section where Sam is attacked was lifted and combined with part of "Camaro on the Run" from the previous film, for immediately before the Egyptian police chase.
- 1m07 INSv5.3 The Shard Drops (Insert) (0:26) — Unused cue originally intended for the Shard's fall through the floor.
- 1m07 REVv5.4 The Shard Drops (End) (0:36) — Bumblebee bursts out of the garage and destroys the Appliancebots.
- 1m07av1. The Shard Is Saved (0:30) — Sam recovers the Shard as Mikaela arrives.
- 1m08v01 Bee Weeps (0:55) — Bumblebee is distraught over Sam's inability to take him to college.
- 1m12av3.6 NEST Operations Center (0:56) — The NEST team returns to Diego Garcia. The beginning of the track, where Soundwave orders Wheelie to pursue Mikaela, was swapped for "NEST Operations Center (Alternate Start)."
- 1m14v3.5 Galloway's Arrival (1:03) — A furious Galloway interrupts a military funeral on Diego Garcia, wishing to relay a presidential message to Optimus. Some of the strings are muted in the film version.
- 1m14Ins Galloway's Arrival (Insert) (0:36) — In orbit, Soundwave latches onto a military satellite.
- 1M15av5 Galloway Meets Optimus (1:24) — Optimus transforms and relays Demolishor's final message to Morshower. The beginning section of the track, where Lennox is talking to Morshower, is edited down in the film.
- 1m15bv4.11 Galloway Grills Optimus (1:41) — Galloway takes Optimus and the NEST team to task.
- 1m15cv1 What If You're Wrong (1:21) — Soundwave learns the location of the second Allspark Shard as Optimus issues a rebuttal to Galloway. In the film, the end is truncated and several channels are muted, resulting in a rather lower-key ending.
- 1m16vFilm Tech Head (Part 1) (1:30)
- 1m16v3.4 Tech Head (Part 2) (1:46)
- 1m16AvFilm You Work For Me Now (0:16)
- 1m17v3.2 Hot Freshman 55 (1:22)
- 1m17AvFilm Mommy High (1:11)
- 1m18v3 Ravage Drops His Balls (0:35) — Ravage breaks into the Shard containment facility.
- 1m18BIns Reed Man Forms (0:26) — Reedman takes shape in the Shard Chamber.
- 1m18bv8.6 Reed Man (1:09) — Partially used when Reedman steals the Allspark Shard and the soldiers arrive. However, the second half, which would have played during his attack, is instead replaced with a mix of "Sam and Mikaela Find Hut." A pitch-dropped version of the beginning of this track is also used later on, when Sam and Mikaela duck into a hut to hide from Starscream and the Constructicons.
- 2m19v10.3 Diving For Megatron (2:33) — Megatron is resurrected at the bottom of the ocean by Scalpel and the Constructicons. Slightly edited in the film proper, with a short loop as the USS Kansas submerges and an extremely subtle shortening between the first and second hits of Megatron's rise through the ocean.
- 2m21cv1 Cakey Symbols (0:29) — Sam experiences a Shard-based hallucination at a frat party.
- 2m25v1.8 You Don't Need Me (1:35) — Optimus' pleas for Sam's help are refused.
- 2m26v9 The Fallen's Lair (2:23) — Megatron reunites with Starscream and the Fallen aboard the Nemesis.
- 2m27v1.12 Einstein Is Wrong (1:39) — Sam has a Shard-induced meltdown in class.
- 2m28v1.9 Chop Shop Torture (2:32) — As Sam and Mikaela put the pieces together over the phone, Wheelie is captured trying to steal the Shard. Note that the end is slightly truncated in the film, missing part which would have played as Mikaela grappled with Wheelie. However, that particular tidbit was used in Dark of the Moon, when Simmons announces his intent to "tango" with Megatron.
- 2m29v7.4 Autobots On The Move (1:17) — The Autobots roll out as Mikaela flies to a scribbling Sam's aid.
- 2m30v2.2 Eighteen Inches Of Meat (0:20) — Leo fails to win the interest of Alice with pizza.
- 2m31v2.1 Alice Seduces Sam (1:03) — Alice tries to seduce Sam as Mikaela walks in.
- 2m32v1.12 Alice Gets Angry (0:56) — Alice reveals herself as a Pretender and attacks Sam, Mikaela and Leo. The end of this track is cut short as Leo ducks under a library table.
- 2m33av2.7 Escaping Alice (1:37)
- 2m33bv4.3 Helicopter Hell (0:26) — Intended for when Grindor kidnaps Sam, Mikaela and Leo. Swapped out for a truncated "Audibot Joins In and Splits" in the film.
- 2m34Revv1.07 Foundry Exam (Revision) (0:33) — Alternate cue inserted into the scene where Megatron pins Sam down for Scalpel to examine.
- 2m35v3.6 Foundry Save To Forest Fight (1:24) — Optimus and Bumblebee rescue the humans from Megatron and Starscream; Megatron ambushes Optimus as he flees with Sam. In the film, the brass cover of the "New Divide" riff and the lead-up to it are switched around, and some of the drums played during said lead-up (where Megatron executes a backflip as Optimus descends rom the ceiling) are muted. To better line up with the shots of escaping vehicles in the film, there is a subtle shortening edit (around 1:05 in the original version of the track) and a short loop of the end chorus' beginning to compensate for it. The end fades out as Optimus and Megatron roll away into the Pine Barrens.
- 2m35av7.3 Forest Battle (2:10) — Optimus makes his stand in the Pine Barrens. There are two distinct edits of the track in both the regular and IMAX versions of the film, but both use the beginning of the second half, albeit dropped 5% in tempo, for Grindor and Starscream's arrival. The regular version omits the synth panning and crescendo in the beginning, but proceeds mostly unchanged until the Decepticons begin to overpower Optimus, whereupon it is rather drastically shortened. In both versions, the original "New Divide" orchestral piece for Optimus' second wind went unused, replaced with individual edits of " Forest Battle (Alternate 2)."
- 2m36Newv52 Prime Down (1:29) — Megatron kills Optimus as the other Autobots save Sam. Portions of this track later played over the part of "Optimus Rebuilt - Final Battle" where Optimus lies crippled after the Fallen's attack.
- 2m37-40v5.41 Decepticons Invade - The Fallen On TV (6:17) — As the Decepticons launch a devastating series of attacks against Earth,
- 3m37 (1:01)
- 3m39av1 (1:11)
- 3m41v1.09 Optimus Delivered (1:11) — Optimus' remains are delivered to NEST, and Galloway turns on the Autobots. There's a subtle abbreviation between the two sections in the film.
- 3m42v4 Don't Give Up (2:39)
- 3m42av1.2 Drive To Robowarrior (1:19) — Leo suggests turning to "Robowarrior" for help; Sam's group travels to New York. The ending fades out earlier in the film.
- 3m43v1.03 The Meat Locker (0:45) — Sam makes a plea to Simmons, who then takes him, Mikaela and Leo to his archive below the meat locker.
- 3m43Av4 Simmons' Symbols (1:53) — Simmons walks Sam, Leo, and Mikaela through the transformers' long history on Earth.
- 3m44v4 The Seekers (0:42) — Wheelie pinpoints the locations of the Seekers.
- 3m45v2.22 Simmons In A Funk (Part 1) (0:35)
- 3m45vFilm Simmons In A Funk (Part 2) (0:33)
- 3m45AvFilm Fun With Tazers (0:38)
- 3m46v8 Model Airplanes (3:09)
- 3m48v3.5 Symbols In The Dirt (0:51) Sam shows the symbols to Jetfire, who then teleports the group to Egypt.
- 3m49v7.13 Jetfire Rambles The Plot (3:35) — Jetfire provides exposition on the Dynasty of Primes, the Matrix of Leadership, and the Fallen. There seems to be loop or mix with the original "Fallen" suite when he and his battle with the other Primes is touched upon, and the vocals have been muted.
- 3m51v3.4 Moving Forward (0:42) — Sam's group evades the Egyptian police. Contains a subtle loop in the film to extend it out to cover the duration of the chase.
- 3m52v1.18 Call To Lennox (3:42)
- 3m53v1 Pyramid Romance (1:06) — Sam and Mikaela share a tender moment beneath the pyramids.
- 3m54vFilm Sam Gets An Idea (0:23) — Sam has an epiphany about Jetfire's riddle and alerts the others.
- 4m54v2 The Three Stars (0:34) — Sam explains the meaning of the "Three Stars" riddle.
- 4m55v2 Galloway Parachutes (2:03) — Sam and Co. travel to Petra as NEST rid themselves of Galloway.
- 4m56-57v6.16 Petra (1:47)
- 4m58v3 Tomb Of The Primes (2:47) — Sam and the others discover the Tomb of the Primes and the atrophied Matrix; the NEST planes arrive on the scene.
- 4m59v1.8 The Drop (1:29)
- 4m60v2 One Man (1:49)
- 4m61v5.4 We Need Assist (3:56) — As Morshower gets drones in the air as Megatron calls down a wave of Decepticons. The movie utilization rearranges the "One Man" motif heard When Simmons and Leo are riding in Skids, and the last section, which would have played while NEST formulates a strategy and the Constructions gather, looping part of "Decepticons Invade - Fallen on TV" instead (though one swell from the original seems to make it in there). The end of the film version may also utilize part of the "Tensation" suite from the first film when Simmons turns around.
- 4m64-66v2.1 Sam and Mikaela Find Hut (3:34)
- 4m67v1.06 Escaping The Suck (0:38) — Simmons, Leo, and the Twins try not to be sucked up by Devastator. Truncated towards the end in the film, cutting off when Mudflap is sucked up.
- 4m68v1.12 Green Twin Escapes (1:53) — The Twins battle Devastator as the Decepticons try to force Sam's cooperation using his parents. The beginning is slightly abridged in the film, starting during the reprise of "Optimus vs. Megatron." Additionally, there is a subtler edit when Judy throws her purse at Rampage.
- 4m69-70v5.23 Bumble Bee Attacks - Parents Goodbye (3:00) — Bumblebee saves the Witwickys and Mikaela from Rampage; Sam leaves his parents to find Optimus. A middle section which would have played from Bumblebee's crippling of Rampage to the dozer-bot's demise was excised in the film, supplanted instead by "Bumble Bee Kicks Ass" during Rampage's end. The end note is also cut off in the transition back to the soldiers' battle.
- 4m69-70END Bumble Bee Kicks Ass (0:24) — Bumblebee overpowers and destroys Rampage.
- 4m71v1.47 Simmons ' Moment - It's A Trick - Wilder Chat (4:35)
- 4m74v4 Precious Cargo (1:37)
- 4m75-76v1.38 Devastator Blown - Orange Smoke (3:19) — Jetfire returns to kill Mixmaster and Scorponok, Devastator is destroyed, and Sam is killed by Megatron during the airstrike. Note that part of the track meant to play during Devastator's fall down the pyramid is not used in the film, and an additional horn note is added while Devastator destroys the top of the pyramid.
- 4m77v7 Sam Down - Infinite White - Optimus Reborn (3:50) — Sam is returned to life by the Primes; Optimus is resurrected.
- 4m80v6 Optimus Rebuilt - The Final Battle (3:22) The part intended for when Optimus lies crippled is replaced by a mix of "Prime Down" in film,
- 4m81v4 The Fallen Falls (1:55) — Optimus destroys the Fallen, Starscream and Megatron escape, and the humans rejoice.
- 4m81bv1 Sam Our Hero (1:51) — Likely the original composition for the end of the film, this reprise of "No Sacrifice, No Victory" went unused in the film, but did become the end of "I Rise, You Fall" on the Album.
- 1m02A Ice Cream Truck (Source) (0:15) — Played by the Twins whenever they are in Ice Cream Truck mode.
- 1m04B Ice Cream Truck Melts (Source) (0:04) — Emanates from a disoriented Mudfap after the Twins crash in combined mode.
- 1m4A Asian Diner (Source) (0:08) — Short comedic pluck played when a fleeing Sideways interrupts a family's dinner.
- 1m05a Pt1v7 Optimus To The Rescue (Short) (0:43) — Beginning plays when Epps orders Optimus dropped into Shanghai.
- 1m05bv3 Sam Off To College (Alternate) (1:28)
- 1m12a AltStart NEST Operations Center (Alternate Start) (0:27)
- 2m25v1.5 You Don't Need Me (Alternate) (1:11)
- 2m35av4 Forest Battle (Alternate 1) (1:00) — Unused alternate cue intended for the battle in the Pine Barrens.
- 2m34v1.6 Foundry Examination (Original Version) (1:58) — Megatron and Scalpel conduct a brutal examinaton of Sam.
- 2m35av6 Forest Battle (Alternate 2) (1:16) — Used during Optimus Prime's second wind in his fight against Megatron, Starscream and Grindor. This track is notable for having two distinct mixings in the regular and IMAX versions of the film. The first, corresponding to the regular cut, is largely unchanged bar some looping of previous elements when Optimus leaps onto Grindor. The IMAX version uses some clever loops and edits to add an additional swell when Optimus hurls his sword into Grindor. The offset from this means that the "Grindor jump" loop comes earlier in this version. In addition, the loop itself is less ornate.
- 2m36v9 Prime Down (Original Version) (2:00) — Alternate cue for Optimus' death. This serves as the basis for the first part of the "Infinite White" suite.
- 3m43Av4 Simmon' Symbols (Alternate) (3:33) — Length and title suggest that this was the original version of the "Einstein's Wrong" suite.
- 3m40v3 The Fallen On TV (Alternate) (1:59)
- 3m41v1.06 Optimus Delivered (Alternate) (1:08)
- 3m48v1.8 Symbols In The Dirt (Original) (0:41)
- 3m52v3.6 Call To Lennox (Alternate) (1:59)
- 4m54Altv2 The Three Stars (Alternate) (0:40)
- 4m81bv1 Sam Our Hero (Short Version) (0:41) — Our heroes proudly stand together on the prow of an aircraft carrier. Note that a brief bit of "No Sacrifice, No Victory" from the first film was discreetly mixed into the beginning of this track in the film proper.
Notes
- Linkin Park and Hans Zimmer worked with Steve Jablonsky on the score of the movie. Linkin Park also wrote a song featured in the movie, called "New Divide". It was one of the theme songs for the movie, and they did several interpretations on that theme. The guitar riff of "New Divide" is sampled in the track "NEST".[5]
