A shellformer is a fandom term for a Transformer that transforms by "unpeeling" pieces of one form to reveal the other form inside. Literally, one mode (almost always the Alternate_mode) is a "shell" that closes completely (or close enough) around the robot parts. This term is often used derisively.

Shellforming is still used as a method of transformation, as can be seen by Animated Wreck-Gar, so it looks like Hasbro hasn't quit using them as a way to store your entire robot form just yet.
