This is pure speculation, but from what has been revealed little by little, I guess that Megatron used The Crucible to deliberately superheat the southern hemisphere of the planet, and with what Skids said about the world burning your feet for cycles afterwards, that most people without an flying alt-mode - which would be a whole lot of Autobots - were melted where they stood if they couldn't get off the ground.
